Interest in the sport of soccer is at its highest point ever, with more than 19 million children ages 6-19, from Portland, ME, to Portland, OR, Hawaii and Alaska, on city streets and in suburban fields, playing the game.

In fact, more children are participating in organized soccer than peewee football, youth basketball or Little League baseball. For these children, soccer is more than a pastime, it is a passion.

In order to capitalize on this sporting movement, US Youth Soccer, the largest youth soccer organization in the United States with more than 3 million members, in conjunction with the United States Soccer Federation has declared a non-partisan, official “Youth Soccer Month – Celebrating Soccer in America” be held annually in September.

As part of US Youth Soccer, the state association and the local clubs / leagues are also supporting this initiative and will be holding celebrations throughout the month at tournaments, games, and clinics in the community. In the interest of providing the highest level of awareness of this event, we are requesting that you support the annual Youth Soccer Month through a Governmental Proclamation making the month of September “Youth Soccer Month in city”.

Youth Soccer Month will be comprised of a month-long mixture of national and grassroots activities designed to raise awareness of the physical fitness, psychological and social benefits of participating in “the beautiful game”. Additionally, Youth Soccer Month will highlight the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer. Inner-city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs will all benefit from the exposure generated by Youth Soccer Month.
