What is World Civilizations?

In world civilizations this year we will be studying 9 ancient civilizations:

______Semester 2______

  1. The Americas
  2. Greece
  3. Rome
  4. Middle Ages

Throughout the units, students will be learning vocabulary, geography, government, and culture. We will be using a variety of books, videos, online resources, and additional materials to learn about the civilizations.

Students should expect to complete daily warm ups that they will keep during the unit we are studying. These warm ups contain information that is pertinent for the students; these are usually things that are key to that civilization and they will see this information on tests and quizzes.

At the end of each semester the students will take a comprehensive final test. This means that the students will need to remember everything that they learn throughout the whole semester. The final will cover all knowledge about all of the civilizations they covered in that semester. This will be the final test given in each semester.

THE TECHBOOK

World Civilizations will be taught a little bit different. The district has gotten rid of the book. We will now have an online techbook. This means that students may access their book from home on their computer instead of lugging around a huge book. This also means that students will have access to a laptop in class to do their schoolwork.

Extra Information:

Grades are weighted. Each category is worth a different weight. This means that all assignments are not worth the same amount in the grade book. To find a student’s average you will have to factor in the weight to get to the correct average, simply adding them up and dividing will not work.

Please check your students’ grades and progress using power school. Their grades are visible the minute I put them in the computer.

  • If the student’s grade is highlighted blue, this means you can click on it for more information.
  • If there is a zero in the box that means the assignment has been graded and is missing.
  • If there is no grade in the box, the assignment has been entered but the grades have not. This is not counted for or against students’ grade.

My Grading Scale is

(for all classes):

A: 100%-90%

B: 89%-80%

C: 79%-70%

D: 69%-60%

F: 59%- Below

Weight Scale:

Class work/Homework: 30%

Tests/ Projects: 40%

Quizzes: 20%

Daily Warm-Ups: 10%

Extra Credit—Additional extra credit will not be given. However, students are given the chance to correct all assignments (not tests and quizzes) that are “D’s” and “F’s”. I believe that if a student corrects all “D’s” and “F’s” there shouldn’t be any reason to earn less than a “C”. It is important that the student corrects “D’s” and “F’s” in a timely manner, to increase knowledge of subject matter before a test is given.

Late Work—In 6th grade the school late work policy states that the student may earn up to 80% of the credit allotted. Late work is considered any assignment that is not turned in at the time of teachers’ request. For example, if the student turns in an assignment after school that was due 2nd period, that assignment is late and shall only be given 80% of the credit earned. If the student earns 10/10, the grade entered in the grade book will be an 8/10. It will also be labeled with a little red “L”, symbolizing that it was late.
