Grievance Procedure

Normally, complaints of alleged discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin/ancestry, religion, height, weight, marital status, age, limited English-speaking ability, sexual orientation, or disability can be resolved at the building level through dialogue between staff and students. Should a student or parent/guardian feel resolution through the informal process is unsatisfactory, a more formal grievance procedure, as described below, has been established.

·  Any person who believes he/she has been discriminated against may request a grievance form from the school office. The form must be filled out and returned to the school office within 10 school days following the incident, unless the complaint is against the Superintendent in which case the completed grievance form shall be returned to the Vice-President of the Lenawee Intermediate School District at 4107 North Adrian Highway, Adrian, MI 49221.

·  The school office will forward the complaint to the appropriate Civil Rights Coordinator, unless the complaint is against the Superintendent in which case the completed grievance should be forwarded by the complainant directly to the Vice-President of the LISD Board of Education as is described above.

·  One of the Civil Rights Coordinators will:

o  Investigate the complaint

o  Arrange a meeting with the complainant

o  Complete the investigation and provide a written reply to the complainant

o  Propose a resolution to the complaint if a violation was found

o  Provide the determination to the complainant and the Superintendent

o  Provide the determination to the President of the Board of Education in the event the complaint is against the Superintendent

Appeal Process

The complainant may appeal the Civil Rights Coordinator’s decision by notifying the Superintendent (unless the complaint is against the Superintendent, in which case the appeal shall be made to the LISD Board President as is described below) in writing within 10 calendar days of the Civil Rights Coordinator’s determination. The written appeal should be made to:

Superintendent, Lenawee Intermediate School District, 4107 North Adrian Hwy., Adrian MI 49221

If the complainant wishes to appeal a complaint against the Superintendent, the complainant may appeal the LISD Board of Education Vice-President’s decision to the President of the Lenawee Intermediate School District within 10 calendar days of the Civil Rights Coordinator’s determination. The written appeal should be made to:

President, Lenawee Intermediate School District Board of Education, 4107 North Adrian Hwy., Adrian, MI 49221

Based on the written appeal the Superintendent or Board President may:

·  Conduct additional investigation of the complaint

·  Secure the services of an outside party to investigate the complaint

The Superintendent or Board President’s decision shall be final.
