CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

RESIDENTIAL ASSISTANTS

Term of appointment / Residential Assistants are appointed for one academic year, with new applications being called for annually. Existing appointees may reapply.
For these purposes, the term of appointment is from Monday 4th February 2008 until 4.00 pm on Sunday 16th November 2008 inclusive of all breaks in the academic year.
Eligibility to Work / Appointees must be eligible to work in NewZealand. Appointments offered to applicants who are not NewZealand citizens cannot be confirmed until evidence of eligibility to work has been provided.
Remuneration / Each Residential Assistant will be paid a taxable salary of $186.00 gross per week plus 8% holiday pay at the end of the appointment. Payment will be made by way of fortnightly installments to the credit of a bank account. Each Residential Assistant will also receive a one-off training payment of $500 gross in their first pay period, and a further one-off $500 gross additional payment the week beginning 7th July 2008. Payment of the training allowance is dependant on attendance and participation in the training programmes for residential staff.
Rental / Each Residential Assistant will reside in a study-bedroom in the Hall and will pay the full accommodation rate for the term of his/her employment. Appointees are required to agree to the conditions of residency in the Hall of Residence.
Residence and duty
requirements / Residence and duty requirements are listed in the Position Description attached. More specific duties are in the Residential Assistant’s manual.
Paid Sick Leave / Sick leave on pay is available for up to 14 days (consecutive) during the term of the appointment. The Residential Manager may require a medical certificate.
Notice to terminate / Appointments are terminable by two weeks notice on either side except in the case of summary dismissal. Appointees will remain bound by the conditions of residency in the Hall.
Disciplinary procedures / In the case of alleged misconduct or unsatisfactory performance of duties, the Residential Manager, in consultation with the Group Manager, Student Support Services, may suspend a Residential Assistant. Any such suspension will normally be on pay. A full investigation of the matter will be undertaken and any disciplinary or dismissal decision will be taken in accordance with the University's Staff Code of Conduct Disciplinary Procedures.
Abandonment of employment / Where a Residential Assistant is absent for more than three days at a time when she/he is required to be in residence and/or on duty, without notification to the Residential Manager, it shall be deemed that service has been terminated without notice.
Conduct / The successful candidate will accept the University's Staff Code of Conduct and other employment policies as a condition of their employment. A copy of these documents will be provided with the offer of employment package.
Note / Other conditions of service and privileges applying to other categories of University staff are not available to Halls of Residence Residential Assistants, such as parking privileges, staff ID cards, fees concessions, etc.
