PETER AND PAULINE SINNER SCHEIDT

Written 2001

**WANTED** Stories about Peter Scheidt and Pauline Sinner Scheidt:

They were born in Stahl, Russia. They, along with their 2 sons, Fred and George, moved to Culbertson, NE. Their third child, Katie Scheidt,

was born in Sioux City, IA. On the way to Culbertson, Pauline must have been pregnant when she left Russia.

They are on the Ellis Island records for 1901. They arrived at the port of NY on Aug 28, 1901 from the city of Leapaw (?) Russia.

Both Peter and Pauline’s moms came to America. Peter’s mom: Marie Catherine Fries Scheidt. Pauline’s mom: Marie Catherine Donis Sinner.

Peter and Pauline had a farm east of Culbertson, NE. Raised corn etc…normal crops…a few cows.

When they got older, they sold the farm and moved to town. Built the house they moved into.

Peter and Pauline’s house was near the Brehm girls. The side of the house was on the alley, and front faced the street.

Memories from Harold Brehm: (Peter and Pauline’s grandson, Katie Scheidt Brehm’s son)

Peter loved to work with wood.

He carved many different things. Animals: chicken toys for children. Footstools, ashtray stands.

He made an altar for a church.

He carved a chicken paddle for Harold…his grandson.

He carved a man that dances a jig on strings.

He carved a rocker horse that went to Pauline Scheidt Wendling & Paul Wendling, (Lois might have it now)

When grandson Harold Brehm knew Peter and Pauline. Pauline was sick.

Peter would give Harold a penny for candy. Harold would run down to the store and get candy.

Then one day Harold told him that he was getting too big for pennies, so he wanted nickels. So from then on, Peter would give him nickels.

Peter Scheidt lived with Katie Scheidt Brehm and Sam Brehm after Pauline died.

The story goes, that Peter had to always go down and check the paint on his toys. He would get himself a little nip in the process.

Harold can’t remember where he slept in their little house. Harold slept in the basement. There was a big living room in middle of the house. On the right was a room for Sam and Katie. The back part was the kitchen. Peter must have slept in the living room on a couch that made into a bed.

Peter loved to fish. He was a fisherman. Sam would take him fishing sometimes. But he was older so they didn’t go often.

Peter outlived all his fisher buddies. When he was younger he and his buddies would go fishing.

He was a real drinker. He loved his drink. But Harold never remembers him being drunk

Peter used to take the bus to Culbertson, NE. A guy in Culbertson, NE would sell him a bottle and he would bring it back on the bus. He put the bottle in the basement and goes downstairs everyone in awhile.

Sam and Katie would talk about it and Uncle Fred would talk about it. He was not allowed to buy liquor under the state pension that he was getting from the Government. He was not supposed to buy liquor. So he couldn’t buy it from the local store. So he went to Culbertson.

Peter’s brother Samuel was the proprietor of a Organ Factory, a pipe organ is in a church in Saratov. We have a picture of the factory.

Pauline Sinner married Peter Scheidt her brother Manual Sinner

Daughter: Katie Scheidt Son: John Sinner his wife: ***Esther (Fahrenbruch) Sinner

Katie married Sam Brehm:

Sam Brehm’s sisters were Mae, Mary, Esther, Elsie Brehm

"Yes--I knew the Brehm Girls--when John, husband, retired we were living in Iowa, that was in '77, we moved back home which was Culbertson and bought the house across the street from the Brehm Girls. When Mae came to visit the last time I was the one who wheeled her out of the house when they would take her to McCook. Would help Mary balance her check book and now I have trouble doing my own. Also reupholstered their davenport for them and cut down trees, picked up their mail at times, just neighborly. Pete Scheidt, the carpenter, lived in Culbertson in the Forties and we lived in his house in forty two before my husband was transferred to Iowa with his job, he worked for Sidles Company. I now live in a retirement home in McCook, across the street from the hospital, been here since June of O2, had a heart attack in April of O2 and here I am ninety years young.
