Leptospirosis
o  Exposure of wound to river water / Event committee to agree on control measures. These will depend heavily on the extent of the hazard. Some of the measures might be:
i)  Postpone event until lightning storm passes.
ii)  Cancel event/ limit entries to senior rowers/ shorten course to avoid Road Bridge.
iii)  Ensure appropriate clothing is worn.
iv)  Cancel event/ limit entries to senior rowers/ shorten course.
v)  Ensure appropriate clothing is worn at boat inspection point/ limit entries to senior rowers if weather is too severe.
vi)  Cancel event if there is not sufficient light
vii)  Indoor space and marquees provided for shelter
viii)  Postpone until fog or mist lifts or until there is sufficient visibility
i)  Toilet and washing facilities to be made available at rowing club, and Riverside university campus building. If entrant numbers are high additional toilets can hired in.
ii)  Arrange for the appropriate utility or contractor to sort any problems.
iii)  Litter bins to be provided – UWRC to inspect site after race
iv)  Hygiene procedures apply. Kitchen has been inspected
The extent of any control will depend at the time of failure and will be decided by the event committee.
i)  Shorten course or cancel if multiple failures occur.
ii)  Request aid of spectators (e.g. coaches), shorten course or cancel depending on the extent of shortage.
iii)  Use other equipment that will be in reserve
iv)  Cancel event
v)  If comms channels go down emergency land line and mobile phone can be used
i)  Keep walkways clear. Allocate grassed area to store blades and other equipment.
ii)  Clear snow/ ice and deploy salt.
iii)  Keep steps clear and ensure stage marshals are aware.
iv)  Keep steps clear and allocate marshal to direct/ aid boats moving up and down steps.
i)  Club car Park not to be used apart from first aid vehicle.
ii)  Umpires at steps to direct boats.
i) Umpires and Fire safety to assess event and specified rescue boats.
ii) Marshall locations and duties agreed using experience, BR Row Safe.
iii)  First Aiders in attendance (2 paramedics + 2 technician and 1 first aider per safety launch and 6 -12 Bank based club first aiders), dry clothes available, emergency plan agreed and circulated. Blankets and dry clothing provided at Camp + Club and Sea scouts.
iv)  To be marshalled and buoyed out with appropriate lanes for returning crews, to avoid collisions
v)  Race operators will be placed also on known hazard areas along the course to warn and pre-empt incidents (ie first bend on course)
i)  Athletes encouraged to dress open cuts in waterproof dressings.
ii)  Wound as a result of incident on water disinfected by safety crews or event safety advisor. Athlete encouraged to take a warm shower.
iii)  Athlete informed about potential for Weils Disease to develop, and relevant step to contact their GP if any symptoms appear.
iv)  If athlete is under 18 their attending coach will be informed about potential Weils Disease and subsequent steps. / Low
