BACKGROUND

Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Trust (Sport Birmingham) is focussed on improving the lives of young people through sport.We are delivering a new project that is focused on increasing the number of young people engaged in open-access youth provision, with sport being a main driver of this. The overall aim of this project is to provide increased opportunities for young people in identified areas of Birmingham, leading to positive outcomes and better prospects.

JOB TITLE: Youth & Sport Engagement Officer

JOB OVERVIEW

The Youth & Sport Engagement Officer will work closely with the Birmingham Sport & Physical Activity Trust team to ensure that delivery is of high quality and meets minimum operating standards. The post holder will specifically join the current team working on our flagship youth engagement project to engage young people in meaningful open access youth provision, with the aim of supportingyoung peopleto develop and have positive prospects for their future. The post holder will be responsible for the planning, delivery and expansion of youth provision at the hub site in East Birmingham.

MAIN CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess the needs of young people, and plan youth programmes related to the development of young people and their future prospects.
  • Co-ordinate the delivery of the youth provision at specified hub site.
  • Deliver sports and physical activities, individual development and support sessions.
  • Regularly monitor and review the youth provision at specified hub site.
  • Mentor and support young people attending sessions.
  • Support the outreach function of the project to engage with a wide variety of young people in different locations.
  • Set up and co-ordinate a Youth Panel to feed into programme plans and inform delivery at the hub site
  • Recruit, train and manage staff and volunteers to ensure the successful delivery of youth provision at the hub site.
  • Source further funding to develop and expand the current project.
  • To be responsible for all equipment used during the delivery of session, ensuring it is maintained, clean and safe. To report any defects to line manager immediately.
  • Undertake administrative tasks, maintain effective monitoring systems and compile regular reports to showcase the impact of the funding.
  • Work in partnership with other Youth & Sport Engagement Officers to ensure sharing of good practice across hub sites and joined up working towards expansion of the project.
  • Attend regular training and development opportunities to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding, health and safety and local policy developments.
  • Maintain partnerships with other local organisations working in the area, e.g. West Midlands Police Community Safety Team, etc.

The post holder must comply with Birmingham Sport and Physical Activity Trust Health and Safety policy and in particular is required:-

  • To cooperate with their line manager and senior management, to work safely, to comply with health and safety instructions and information and undertake appropriate health and safety training as required
  • Not to intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety and welfare.
  • To report to their manager any health and safety concerns, hazardous condition or defect in the health and safety arrangements.

Job Title: / Youth & Sport Engagement Officer
Description / The Youth & Sport Engagement Officer will be responsible for delivery of the projectto engage young people in meaningful open access youth provision. The Youth Engagement Officerwill have responsibility for delivering all aspects of the project at our hub site in Stechford, including associated outreach work.
Educational / Professional qualifications: / Youth Work qualification
5 GCSEs A* - C inc. English and Maths
Sport-specific or multi-sport qualifications (desirable)
Knowledge: / Knowledge of current strategies, national initiatives and issues for youth work in the UK.
Knowledge of local issues facing young people in Birmingham
Understanding of what motivates young people to take part in sport and physical activity as well as the barriers that prevent participation.
Knowledge of equity and safeguarding and protecting children, in particular within a youth work setting.
Knowledge of current funding streams relevant to the youth sector.
Skills and
Abilities: / Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and the ability to motivate, enthuse, persuade, and influence both staff and participants.
Problem solving skills to deal with set-backs and challenges
Ability to work under pressure effectively and deal with conflicting priorities
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
Effective organisational skills, e.g. time management, managing priorities and meeting deadlines.
Computer literacy skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and emails
Experience: / Broad youth work experience evidenced by a proven track record of achievements gained by working in the field (e.g. local authority, community organisations, voluntary or private sectors).
Experience of mentoring and supporting young people
Experience of direct session delivery that is successful at recruiting and retaining young people as participants, promoting positive development of young people
Experience of developing youth work programmes based on consultation, insight and need
Experience of working in partnership with community organisations
Experience of initiating, maintaining and developing partnerships - voluntary, public and private sector organisations and other agencies.
Special Requirements: / This post is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check will be required prior to appointment.
