Come spend a delightful and enriching afternoon
with Dr Jenny Edwards.
Jenny Edwards, PhD, has been working in the field of education for 35 years and has taught at the elementary, middle school, and university levels. In addition, she served in staff development in Jefferson County Schools in Denver, Colorado, for four years and was involved in mentoring first- and second-year teachers and presenting seminars. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK), specialising in early childhood education; a Master of Science degree in elementary education from UTK, specialising in reading; and a doctorate in human and organisational systems from Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. She has been studying the impact of words on thinking patterns since the early 1990s.
Presently, Jenny is teaching doctoral students in the School of Educational Leadership and Change at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara. She also leads seminars on Cognitive Coaching, Adaptive Schools, Callahan's Thought Field Therapy, and other topics around the world. She has presented on these topics in French, Spanish, Italian, and English in 11 countries.
Jenny is a prolific writer. Her latest book is “Inviting Students to Learn: 100 Tips for Talking Effectively With Your Students” published in 2010 by ASCD.
Workshop Overview
Our goal as educators is for all of our students to learn at their highest levels. In this half-day seminar, Jennifer will discuss the research on the importance of teachers using language effectively and mindfully with students so that they can learn. She will be exploring with participants, the mind-set behind communicating invitationally with students. Then, participants will be practising language tips for teaching so that students learn. Participants will also have the opportunity to design a plan for implementing those learnings.
Workshop Agenda
Participants will:
- Discuss the research behind teaching invitationally.
- Explore the mind-set behind communicating invitationally with students, including:
- Thinking About Learning and Teaching
- Thinking About Building Relationships with Students
- Valuing Students
- Focusing on Positive Intentions
- Asking Key Questions
- Establishing rapport
- Using intonation effectively
- Explore language tips for teaching
- Make plans to apply learnings with students
Who should attend
This workshop is for all teachers who are keen to explore how language can be used “invitationally” in the classroom so that students can learn.
It is recommended that school participants attend as a team of at least two persons so that you will be able to be critical friends to each other as you practise the skills learnt when you return to school.
