About the Office:
The Office of the Inspector General for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (Office) is the oldest state-level inspector general’s office in the nation. The Office has a broad mandate to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse in the expenditure of public funds. In keeping with this mandate, the Office conducts studies and programmatic reviews at all levels of government to uncover fraud, waste and abuse, and to identify system-wide vulnerabilities and opportunities for improvement. Duties:
The Office seeks a data analyst intern to support the Office in fulfilling its mandate. The dataanalyst intern willperform complex data mining and analysis for two divisions within the Office:the Policy and Government Division and the Bureau of Program Integrity. The data analyst intern will assist in identifying data that could be relevant to studies and programmatic reviews, and will help analyze data to identify fraud, waste or abuse in the use of public funds. The intern will also help develop and evaluate methodologies for sampling data from large databases.Specific responsibilities include:
- Identifying and collecting primary data.
- Assessing the quality of the data obtained by the Office and assisting with the development and implementation of methods to improve the quality of the data by obtaining missing values and resolving inconsistencies.
- Converting and formatting data.
- Performing analyses of quantitative and qualitative data.
- Interpreting data and producing clear visual data summaries, written analyses, reports, graphics, tables and presentations.
- Organizing qualitative information in a manner that facilitates its use for policy analysis.
- Developing and maintaining project databases and spreadsheets.
- Working with public and private data sources from a wide range of data providers and in multiple formats.
- Recommending methodologies for ongoing analysis of large databases.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Six months or more of relevant course work or experience working in data analytics.
- Experience using ACL or similar analytical tools.
- Extensive use of Excel, Access, SQL or other relevant software.
- Experience working with and analyzing large data sets using analytic software packages.
- Experience presenting data and information in a user-friendly manner to inform conclusions and recommendations.
- Experience applying analytical tools and models, programming database queries, analyzing data, and creating reports.
- Demonstrated knowledge of statistical and analytical methods and tools that support research and assessment.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical and research skills.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of health care data.
