(Child/Adolescent Focus) / This particular placement would offer a specialization in area of Pediatric Nephrology. The graduate student would be introduced to Pediatric Nephrology through Dialysis Treatment, general Nephrology Clinics and Pre, During and Post-Transplant care. Children’s Hospital /Pediatric Institute at the Main Campus / Pediatric Transplant
(Child/Adolescent Focus) / This specialization of Pediatric Transplant is for Heart, Liver and Small Intestine. The graduate student would learn about organ procurement, conducting transplant assessments, presenting to the Selection Committee and assisting with the coordination of post-transplant care. The graduate student would be a part of post-transplant clinics as well. / Vitello, Kelly /
Pediatric Outpatient Clinics / Pediatrics
(Child/Adolescent Focus) / The graduate student would work with a social work who is responsible for providing services to Outpatient families. The area is in Complex Care Clinic and General Pediatrics. The venue would be a rich learning experience introducing the student to global community resources; involvement with Children Protective Services and working within an Interdisciplinary Team. Fairview Hospital, Inpatient Psychiatry (CWRU only) / Pediatric Behavioral Health Inpatient / Complete psychosocial assessments by interviewing parents, patients and participating in the team meeting with the physician and parents. Contact outpatient providers to obtain collateral information about patient in the outpatient setting and provide clinical updates to these providers. Meet with parents and patient to hold family sessions and provide education to patient and family about diagnosis and treatment. Coordinate discharge plan for patient based upon treatment needs. Provide daily updates to the interdisciplinary treatment team in morning rounds. Must be able to work with a diverse population of patients, potentially angry parents and professionals from other disciplines who may not have the same view as social workers. / Planovsky, Ross /
Main Campus Hospital, Taussig Cancer, Breast Cancer / Adult Oncology / Outpatient setting dealing mostly with women with various stages of breast cancer mainly going through chemotherapy. One has the opportunity to complete a psychosocial assessment with goal directive clinical practice. One can provide supportive counseling throughout their entire journey. We deal with patients with stage 4 breast cancer and things like end of life planning will be addressed. I run a Breast Cancer Support Group and an intern has the option of leading a group if comfortable. We also have a screening tool to assess for depression, anxiety, and suicide in the outpatient clinic so assessing quickly and coming up with a plan. We work closely with our team. Main Campus Hospital / Transplant Center / Students have the opportunity to learn about and conduct psychosocial assessments for potential transplant recipients as well as living donors, presentation of potential recipients at weekly selection committee meetings, and interacting with patients as they move through the transplant process.
