Background
The Deptford Lounge, developed by the London Borough of Lewisham and opened in January 2012, is the new flagship building at the centre of Deptford. Together with the Resolution Studios and Tidemill School it forms part of a complex of three buildings. The Deptford Lounge houses the public library and is intended to function as both a ‘living room in the city’ and a ‘learning centre’ for the communities of North Lewisham. Other services include a café, adult education, four resident offices, five meeting rooms and a number of large flexible use spaces.
The Albany - a performing arts venue located just one minute away from the Deptford Lounge - has been appointed by Lewisham Council to provide management of this new building and to develop its community programmes and hire functions.
In the past year, we have successfully worked on increasing reach, revenue and footfall. We have created links with the library and local partners to develop a year-round programme of events, including business breakfasts, performances, exhibitions and advice services. We have supported fundraising for these activities and business start-ups to establish a regular offer of classes and services at the Lounge.
