Entrance Antiphon

The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world and that which contains all things understands what is said, alleluia.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 104

Lord, send forth your Spirit,
and renew the face of the earth.
Bless the Lord, O my soul!
O Lord my God, how great you are.
How many are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your creatures.
You take away their breath, they die,
returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, and they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord last forever!
May the Lord rejoice in his works!
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
I will rejoice in the Lord.
Lord, send forth your Spirit,
and renew the face of the earth. /

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!

Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful;
and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia!

Communion Antiphon

They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke of the marvels of God, alleluia.

Saint Vincent de Paul Society- Donations/Debit Orders

The Fatima SVDP is desperately in need of regular monthly income for their ongoing projects at Ottowa, Wylie House, Missionaries & St Theresa’s Children’s Home, since their current monthly commitments is a minimum of approx R20000,00 per month just for these projects alone. With the increasing cost of food, even this amount is not really sufficient anymore and if income cannot be increased then the amount of food distributed will need to be reduced proportionately. The regular income of the SVDP is limited to the once a month basket collection (which averages between R6000 to R8000) plus income from sales of second hand goods at the Golden Hours stall of about R1000,00, plus a few debit orders from Fatima parishioners of about R4000. So this means the SVDP has a substantial shortfall every month, which it has managed to subsidise previously by way of funds accumulated from other past fundraising events. However these funds are nearly depleted and the SVDP is appealing to the Parish for help and in particular to those prepared to donate via way of monthly debit order, as this will help the SVDP to know how much they can spend on helping the poor every month. If only 50% of the 600 families in the Parish donated just R100 per month via debit order then the SVDP would have R30000 which would give them the funds to increase the food currently distributed. So please give this serious consideration as your SVDP cannot function without your HELP and thereby make the SVDP your CHARITY of CHOICE!

If you would like to make a contribution to the SVDP any payments/debit orders can be paid directly into their bank account below (or debit order forms can be emailed to you):

BANK: FIRST NATIONAL BANK

BRANCH: DURBAN NORTH BRANCH CODE: 220426

Pentecost Sunday Year C
19th May, 2013 Thomas O’Loughlin
Commentary
First Reading
At the vigil there is a choice of Gen 11; Ex 19 or Ez 37 all of which present the spirit of God, which we Christians understand as the Spirit, as his power bringing life into the world. There is the temptation to avoid these readings in favour of Acts 2:1-11 as this is ‘the “story” of Pentecost, but this should be avoided as that text says ‘when the day … had come’ and, more importantly, these vigil readings focus on the Spirit working in the world which is the feast’s theme.
Day Mass: Acts 1-11.
Where Luke presents a scene to convey his belief that the Church carries out its mission in the power of the Spirit. Introduce it as ‘the Spirit empowered the apostles in their ministry, he is now empowering us in our ministries.’
Second Reading
Vigil: Rom 8: 22-27: the Spirit is active always and everywhere, and he is active within our lives.
Day Mass: 1 Cor 12:3-7; 12-13. Another classic snippet of Paul on the Spirit: the Spirit brings unity, but is the source of a diversity of ministries – this is a most appropriate text if you intend to focus on the Spirit as the animator of ministry in the community in the homily.
Optional day reading, year C: Rom 8:8-17. The Spirit makes us children of God, and note that his activity is not limited to the group of believers. There are no bounds to his work.
Gospel
(Jn. 20: 19-23).
Presents the Spirit as the source of forgiveness within the Church animating it to be the messenger/builder of forgiveness in the world. This gospel with its clear emphasis of the Spirit as the life-force of the Church’s ministry is to be preferred to the optional choice for year C.
Option for Year C: Jn 14:15-16; 23-26 presents the Spirit as the teacher who leads us into all truth, and another advocate - in Jn these promises form part of Christ’s farewell prayer for the Church.
