ENDANGERED SPECIESPROJECT

Date Due: MAY11th, 2018

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) periodically produces a Red List of Threatened Plants and Animals. In 2011, it listed 18,678 species as threatened, endangered, or extinct. To help protect these species President Richard M. Nixon signed into law in 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The IUCN is also responsible for developing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES. This is a treaty signed by over 130 nations to limit or stop trade in endangered species products made from them. CITES classifies species under one of two headings: Appendix I lists critically endangered species, Appendix II those at serious risk. While we have implemented laws and treaties to help protect endangered species, more are still added to the lists every year. In this project you will be assigned an endangered species to research. You will put together a Google Slides or Powerpoint presentation to share with the class that includes allof the following:

1. A title slide that includes the common name of your species, the scientific name, and your name.

SPECIES INFORMATION:

2. The classification of your species. That is, what type of organism is it- plant, reptile, insect, mammal, etc.

3. Where is it found? EX; country(ies), continent(s), etc. You may include a map.

4. Habitat – forest, grassland, tundra, etc.

5. IUCN status – threatened, extinct, endangered, etc. CITES classification can also be used.

6. At least one picture of your species.

7. A description of your species. How big/small is it? What does it weigh? How long does it live? How many offspring does it have? Does it have strange behavior? Does it migrate? Do the males and females look different? There are a lot of interesting things that could go here. The more you have the better.

8. What does your species eat? What is its diet?

9. How many are left in the wild? What is the past and/or current population?

OTHER IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED. THESE MUST ALL BE ADDRESSED:

10. What caused the species to become endangered?

11. What can be done or is being done to protect the species?

12. Why should this species be saved?

13. If this species becomes extinct, what impact will that have on the ecosystem in which it lived?

14. One slide with a list of all websites and books used. At least one of each must be used.
