Recognizing & Celebrating the Seven Essential Characteristics found in a Vital Parish

Our seven-week series in preparation for our Parish Assembly on Thursday, November 6th, continues. A member of our Pastor Council will speak at every Mass after Communion this weekend on Evangelization. Next weekend there will be a presentation on Leadership.

Evangelization

Evangelization is what a parish is doing to tell others about Jesus Christ. Evangelization is spreading the Gospel message of Jesus and inviting others to get to know Jesus and to live a Christian way of life. Evangelization is the fundamental mission of the Church and every parish. How each parish carries out the mission of evangelization varies and is unique to each parish community.

Basic expectations for an Evangelizing parish include:

provide retreat and faith formation opportunities for persons of all ages;

provide programs for parish spiritual renewal;

provide variety of prayer experiences and faith sharing opportunities;

provide opportunities for those not part of the Catholic community to learn about the Catholic

faith and participate in the R.C.I.A.;

provide outreach to persons who have become estranged from the Church

provide educational/formation opportunities for the Laity;

assure opportunities for parishioners to develop a missionary spirit and support of mmissionary

efforts

The National Conference of Catholic Bishops in their document, Go and Make Disciples, identified three goals for evangelization. The goals are:

  1. To bring about or increase in all Catholics an enthusiasm for their faith that, in living their faith in Jesus, they freely share it with others.
  2. To invite all people, whatever their social or cultural background, to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ and become Catholic.
  3. To foster gospel values in our society, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance of family, and the common good of our society, so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the power of Jesus Christ.

This is the mission of all members of the Church: to practice their faith with enthusiasm; to invite others to share their faith, and to transform society. Evangelization is at the heart of our individual and communal call to bear witness to Christ.

Reflection & Prayer:

In light of the above, ask yourself the following questions and give thought and prayer to your reflection:

As a Catholic and as a parishioner of Saint Anselm Church, am I and Saint Anselm Church living out these three goals? In what ways? Are there ways I or the Parish can better live out these goals and how?

Dear Parishioners,

Respect Life Sunday

With the Church throughout the United States, we observe Respect Life Sunday this weekend. This observance is made necessary because of the gross disrespect for life that is present in our society.

As individuals and as a community, we can change the face of our world to reflect the value and dignity of every human life. Laws that permit or promote abortion, infanticide, human cloning, destructive embryo research, or physician-assisted suicide ignore the sanctity of each human life and undermine the foundation of a just and healthy society. As citizens and people of faith, each of us should actively advance our convictions in the public square in every legitimate and ethical way. We should rededicate ourselves to upholding the sanctity of human life, and hold those elected to represent us to the same standard.
