Introduction

The second class in Mt. Pleasant Quilting Company’s Traditional Series-with a twist. Learn Marci Baker’s technique for strip piecing the 3-dimensional tumbling block pattern. No Y seams. Learn how color value will create visual illusion for this classic design. Technique is from Not Your Grandmother's Tumbling Blocks supplement to The Big Book of Building Block Quilts by Sara Nephew.

Fabrics Needed

Light fabrics: ¼ yard of each color

Medium fabrics: ¼ yard of each color

Dark fabrics: ¼ yard of each color

Background fabric (black): 1 yard

For the Tumbling Blocks sample quilt, we used 4 color combinations - green, blue, yellow and purple. If more or less colors are desired - a TOTAL of 1 yard of each value (light, medium, and dark) are needed, but no cut less that 6" x WOF.

Supplies

Basic Quilting Supplies:

  • Rotary Cutter, mat & rulers*
  • Pins
  • marking pens or chalk pencils
  • Sewing machine, thread, bobbins
  • Scissors

45" by 60" piece of low loft batting (to be used as design wall)

*One ruler MUST be at least 12" in length and have a 60º or 30º marking. A 60º triangle ruler can be used as an alternative, if desired.

Optional: Qtools Corner Cut 60º

Pre-Class Preparation

CUTTING (assuming 4 color combinations):

From each of the light fabrics, cut two 3" width of fabric (WOF) strips.

From each of the medium fabrics, cut four 2½" WOF strips.

From each of the dark fabrics, cut four 2½" WOF strips.

From background (black) fabric, cut one 3½" strips. Subcut these strips into 3½" x 2" rectangles. You will need 16 rectangles.

SEWING:

Sew strips sets together as follows:

  • Medium - light - medium (2 sets of each color)
  • Dark - light - dark (2 sets of each color)
