JOB DESCRIPTION
POST TITLE: / Community Development Worker – Yate
RESPONSIBLE TO: / Director
GRADE/SALARY: / £12.42 per hour – 18.5 hour a week, fixed term for 12 months
AIMS AND OJBECTIVES / This position is funded through Yate Town Council. The main purpose of the role will be to work with the Town Council, Southern Brooks staff, voluntary and community organisations in Yate, statutory services and businesses to develop two projects:
- A Yate community car share scheme
- Yate as a Dementia Friendly community
The post will be based at Yate Town Council office and line managed by Southern Brooks Director and work with Southern Brooks Project team.
Tasks and Duties / Dementia awareness
Ø  To improve awareness of dementia within Yate and the neighbouring area, within community groups, local residents and businesses
Ø  To increase early diagnosis through building public awareness
Ø  To encourage local individuals, groups, and voluntary, statutory and commercial organisations to “sign up” to the DAA and take actions to support and make it easier for people with dementia and their carers to lead normal active lives.
Ø  To raise the needs of people living with dementia
Ø  Promote better understanding of dementia across Yate, in order to reduce stigma and discrimination and promote independence for people living with dementia.
Ø  To work with a Yate Dementia Friends Group to establish and implement suggestions of practical steps.
Ø  To enable & encourage existing and new groups to include both dementia sufferers and their carers.
Community car share scheme
Ø  To work in partnership with other agencies to set up a Yate community car share scheme
Ø  To research and understand gaps in current provision and the needs of local residents
General
Ø  To identify and apply for funding streams for continuation of activities.
Ø  To manage a small budget
Ø  To write regular articles and reports
Ø  To report regularly to Yate Town Council and a project steering group
Ø  To develop Yate’s vision of working with people and communities to help them achieve their full potential
Ø  To work alongside Southern Brooks team and contribute to cross team working, meeting and events
Ø  To contribute to networks and partnerships that bring together the VCSE in Yate
Ø  To liaise and work in co-operation with voluntary and statutory agencies working in the area
Ø  To carry out any such duties as may reasonably be required in relation to a post of this nature

Duties and obligations under the Act that relate to this particular post will be explained to the post holder upon appointment.
Special Notes and Conditions / You will be required to attend meetings outside normal office hours.
The post is subject to a DBS disclosure.
You will need a driving license and access to a car.

PERSON SPECIFICATION – YATE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORKER

Essential (must have)

Ø  Significant experience of work (in a paid or voluntary capacity) within the community

Ø  Proven track record of raising funds from trusts, businesses etc

Ø  Excellent communication skills in written, telephone and face-to-face contact with the ability to communicate effectively

Ø  Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise workload

Ø  Knowledge of the issues and opportunities facing local communities

Ø  An understanding and commitment to equalities

Ø  A practical approach to problem solving

Ø  Ability to make good relationships with people

Ø  Ability to work as part of a team

Ø  Enthusiasm and a genuine desire to work with local people

Ø  An understanding of the needs of people with dementia and their carers

Skills and experience

Ø  Understanding of community development

Ø  Excellent report writing skills and experience of seeking and attaining funding

Ø  Good time management skills

Ø  Excellent marketing and negotiating skills and experience of influencing others from a cross section of the community

Personal attributes / qualities

Ø  Effective negotiation skills

Ø  Ability to manage change and problem solve

Ø  Able to plan, prioritise and deliver in tight timescales

Ø  Able to demonstrate a consistent method of working with others and to operate with confidence and integrity

Ø  Willingness to travel within the defined geographical area of the role

Ø  A knowledge of Yate is desired
