MAKING A BIG BOOK USING THE IMPORTANT BOOK PATTERN

PURPOSE: TO READ TO YOUR STUDENTS AT YOUR PRACTICUM SITE

DUE: March 9 in class for presentation. Attach this form to your book

Rubric or Checklist

4 / £  Big book format: 18X12 (size of large piece of construction paper) or 15X18 or larger.
£  Construction paper, poster board or other suitable stiff paper.
£  Minimum is 3 two-page spreads, along with front and back cover (all the mini poems were 2 page spreads )
£  Theme is about YOU!
£  Age appropriate.
£  Use the poetry pattern from, The Important Book.
£  Any medium of your choice for illustrations. Examples are crayons, photos, clip-art, watercolor, fabric, magazine picture, markers, torn paper, cut paper, pop-up art or …
£  You can paste and glue items. Needs to be neat, completely adhered to page.
£  Use of color.
£  Spacing between letters, lines, and words.
£  Text lines need to be straight with appropriate spacing between lines.
£  Lower case letters at least 1 1/2 inches high. (children can see from distance)
£  Type, print & paste text or use D’Nealian or Zaner-Bloser Manuscript or cursive.
£  Binding is your choice, e.g, wool, metal rings, other interesting materials.
£  Interesting cover front and back.
£  Use appropriate language, photographs, or clip art.
£  ISBN number and copyright (look at one of your texts or a children’s book).
£  Title Page.
£  Completed on time.
£  Organization format.
£  Professional looking, no messy glue, torn paper corners, erasers, etc.
£  Prepared for display & sharing at beginning of class.
£  Plan with teacher and read to students at your practicum site.
£  Place in ePORTFOLIO (Title: 001- My Important Book) (front and back cover, at least 1 2-page spread, along with a 1 page reflection about your experience. See contract.
£  “Write a 1 page reflection of your experience which includes (1) children’s reactions, (2) effectiveness of the layout and text of the book, (3) what you learned about presenting/reading to the class, and (4) what you would do different next time.” From your practicum contract.
*This is a project that needs to worked on over time; not an overnight project.
