Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe – Best Practices Collection

Dear Sir / Madam

The Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe is currently gathering examples of best practice in oral health promotion and prevention from across Europe.

All together, we want to find common solutions to improve oral health across the European Union and to reduce inequalities both across Europe and within Member States. The goals of this exercise are to

  • foster understanding of importance of oral health promotion and prevention amongst policymakers in the EU;
  • demonstrate the cost effectiveness of prevention;
  • raise awareness and disseminate good practices across Europe; and
  • increase the Platform’s focus on providing concrete solutions to the unmet needs in access to quality dental care, and ultimately seeking toimprove general health and overall quality of life.

Best practices could therefore include for example programmes aimed at reduction of tobacco consumption and harm, the introduction of health in all policies, education systems, improving general health through oral health, tackling obesity and/or the prevention of cancer.

We would like to ask you complete the attached template by 21st August 2015referencing any best practice examples you may have in your country or organisation within the provided space.

For the purpose of this exercise, we would like to ask you to be as brief as possible, and to focus your response on the outcomes of the activities. You may wish to attach any additional information (e.g. official reports, news items, pictures, charts, etc.) separately for illustration purposes only. The questionnaire should take no longer than 10 minutes of your time to complete.

Based on this exercise, we will compile the results to be presented at the Second European Oral Health Summit on 13th October 2015 in Brussels. You will shortly receive a personalised invitation.

I look forward to hearing from you and remain available for any questions you may have.

Yours faithfully

Dr. Paula Vassallo

Chair of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe

About the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe

The Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe is a joint initiative of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE), the Council of European Chief Dental Officers (CECDO), the European Association of Dental Public Health (EADPH) and the European Dental Health Foundation (EDHF). Its work is supported by the Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare. The Platform has been created to respond to the Call to Action for Better Oral Health in Europe handed over to then European Health Commissioner by several Members of the European Parliament in 2010. The mission of the Platform is to promote oral health and the cost-effective prevention of oral diseases in Europe, seeking a common European approach towards education, prevention and access to better oral health. Our vision for 2020 is to promote initiatives and share guidance that will help Europeans to improve their oral health, leading to better general health and overall quality of life. You can find more information on our website

Our policy goals include:

  • To promote oral health and the prevention of oral diseases as one of the fundamental actions for staying healthy
  • To provide sound advice and recommendations to policymakers for EU action with regard to EU oral health policy developments
  • To develop the knowledge base and strengthen the evidence-based case for EU action
  • To address oral healthcare inequalities and the major oral health challenges of children and adolescents, of the increasing elderly population, and of the populations with special needs
  • To mainstream oral health across all EU health policies
