What to Expect:

·  Have Fun

·  Develop basic fundamental skills needed to play the game

·  Work hard every day to be your very best

About Practice:

·  Always bring shorts and basketball shoes

·  If you are injured, you should still come to practice – you can always learn with your eyes and your mind

·  If you are sick, contact your coach, stay home, and get well

·  Practice will end every day at 4:45 PM.

·  Parents need to pick up their son(s) by 4:55PM on practice days

Games:

·  Game schedules and driving directions to away games will be provided as soon as possible

·  All players will ride the school bus to away games unless prior arrangements have been made through Chuck Moffatt (Athletic Director) or Bob Cameron (Asst. Athletic Director)

·  All players are encouraged to take the bus home from away games to foster team unity and friendship

·  Players may ride home with their OWN parent(s) on game day, provided the parents sign their athlete(s) out with the coach AFTER the game; players may NOT ride home from an away game with anyone other than their own parents/guardians (per school district policy)

How are teams determined

o  Skill level

o  Defense over offense

o  Positive Attitude

o  Position Needs

o  The Varsity team may not necessarily have all the top players; some “varsity-caliber” players may be better suited to start and play more at the JV level to gain more experience, as these players may not experience as much playing time at the Varsity level as they would like to have for whatever reason(s). If you are one of these players, the coaches will personally talk in depth with you about your team status and why.

Goals/Philosophy

o  We stress learning the basic fundamentals of the game:

§  Dribbling with both hands and without looking at the ball

§  Passing with either hand: bounce, chest, overhead

§  Proper shooting form and shooting range based on ability/strength

§  Understanding the importance of proper footwork

§  Every player will have a role (shooter, playmaker, defensive specialist, etc.)

·  Playing Time

o  We will strive for “fair playing time” as much as possible

§  Varsity level – earned through hard work at practice, positive attitude, skill level, and knowing both offensive and defensive strategies and assignments.

1.  All eligible players will play in every game

2.  In close games, the players who give the team the best chance to be successful (“win”) will play more at the end of the game

3.  In a “non-competitive/blow-out” game, all players will get closer to equal playing time

4.  Equal playing time is NOT guaranteed

§  JV – earned through hard work at practice and positive attitude. Equal opportunity for those players who know the offensive and defensive assignments.

1.  All eligible players will play in every game

2.  We will strive to have as close to fair (“equal”) playing time as possible per game – with the exception of the last four minutes of a close game, where the players who give the team the best chance to be successful (“win”) will play

3.  “Equal”/fair playing time could differ for each player based on his position and the team’s needs

§  Absences from practice affect playing time!

DISCIPLINARY ACTION:

1. Unexcused Tardy (excused tardy requires prior notification and/or a teacher/parent note)

Second and Subsequent Offenses: 4 sets of lines.

This is the “Lakeside Way”!

6.   Poor Grades (a grade-point average of less than 1.75 and/or a grade of “F” in any class)

Any Offense: Player cannot play in a game until minimum grade-point average is achieved AND all classes have grades of “D” or higher. An Academic Improvement Plan must be completed to practice. The following week’s grade check will determine player’s eligibility for the next week.

7.   Games

Unexcused Absences: Any unexcused absence WILL RESULT in a player not playing in the next game. This is for any time this occurs.

Excused Absences: Any player who misses practice, but it is an excused absence, MAY encounter reduced game-playing time in the next game.

8.   Game-day Dress-up

All players are required to wear a collared shirt, a tie, and a pair of nice slacks or khakis to school on game days. Any
