Summer Assignment 2015

Mrs. McGinley & Mrs. Janis- AP Psychology

(email questions to either or )

1.)  DUE DATE: 1st Full Day of Class - You will be reading Lauren Slater’s “Opening Skinner’s Box”. Lauren Slater is a psychologist who, in her book, examines ten important psychological experiments of the twentieth century (most of which have been on past AP exams). Each chapter in the book is about a different psychologist and their famous experiment. You are required to take notes on each of the chapters/experiments (about 1 page for each chapter). These notes can be used in class for a quiz and a timed writing. They MUST be handwritten. Finally, enjoy the book! It is a great and interesting read. It will also give you a good idea of what’s to come in psychology class this year. (You can purchase your own copy or download the text from Mrs. Janis’ website: mrsjanis.wikispaces.com)

2.)  DUE DATE: 1st Full Day of Class- Textbook readings for Chapter 1 and 2. Read Ch 1: The Evolution of Psychology and Ch 2: Research Enterprise in Psychology. Outline each one. Outlines must be hand written to receive credit. There will be a quiz on these chapters & “Opening Skinner’s Box” the first full week of school. These outlines take quite a bit of time so plan accordingly!! You will be required to produce flash cards for each of the terms, concepts, and people listed at the bottom of each assignment sheet. These flash cards will be checked and graded at the end of each unit. They must be hand written. Flash cards are not due until the third week of school. They are always due the class before or on test days.

3.)  DUE DATE: Sept 8th or 9th (which ever date your class meets)

Choose your favorite chapter from the Slater book and design a creative and imaginative project to illustrate the procedure and the findings of the research. You have quite a bit of latitude here to create your own project. Some examples might be a video (script required), movie, model, comic book, talk show or other original and artistic representation of the scientific research. You will be presenting these IN CLASS. Please Note: No PowerPoint, Prezi, posters or similar projects will be permitted. You must be CREATIVE in demonstrating your concept. For all abstract and representational projects, such as models, collages or artwork, please provide a written description of what the project is representing and make connections to the text. See rubric for how points will be distributed.

4.)  Failure to complete any part of these assignments will mean removal from the course, regardless of which teacher you have for next year.

INTEGRITY POLICY

Please take note: Research, homework, tests and written work must ultimately be done INDEPENDENTLY and work put in your own words unless otherwise instructed by your teacher. To avoid plagiarism, you must employ practices such as paraphrasing, citing other people’s words and concepts, and interpreting websites to draw NEW conclusions. DO NOT CUT AND PASTE material onto written work, PowerPoint presentations, posters, and handouts. Plagiarism is not something I take lightly and would not like to have to write you up according to the rules outlined in the student handbook in your agenda. Any speculation of academic misconduct will be brought to the attention of administration immediately.
