Rogerian Argument Research Paper

English 11 AP—Archer

Inspired by the Rogerian argument, your paper will identify a problem, seek to present different viewpoints objectively concerning the resolution of that problem, consider these viewpoints in relation to one another through concession and refutation, and finally offer a reasonable recommendation for a solution to the problem based on your research. The format of the paper is as follows:

  1. Introduction(Length = ½ page)
  2. Introduce the problem
  3. Present background information necessary for understanding the topic
  1. Statement of Position One(Length = 1 page)
  2. Present a summary and synthesis of arguments representing one side of the issue
  3. Synthesize multiple sources concerning this side
  4. Represent multiple lines of argument

Sources: Use at least 3 sources in this section.

  1. Statement of Position Two(Length =1 page)
  2. Present a summary and synthesis of arguments representing another side of the issue
  3. Synthesize multiple sources concerning this side
  4. Represent multiple lines of argument

Sources: Use at least 3 different sources in this section.

  1. Statements of Qualifications/Refutation(Length = 1 pages)
  2. Identify lines of argument in Position One refuted by Position Two
  3. Identify lines of argument in Position Two refuted by Position One

Note: Please understand that this section should refer to the arguments presented in Sections II and III, but new information (i.e., facts, statistics, examples, etc.) must becommunicated. This section must not be used simply to re-iterate or repeat what has already been submitted in Sections II and III.

  3. Synthesize the best parts of both sides in order to find a common ground
