MRS. KENNETT’S NEWSLETTER
FOR WEEK OF 1/2-1/6
Hello Parents,
Happy New Year to everyone! We had a great first day back from the holiday break even considering there were a few tired faces in the morning the kids were fantastic!!
This week starts the beginning of the 3D-Reading testing. We are at the MOY (middle of year) point of the year and the window opens tomorrow and will close on February 3, 2017. That seems like a long window, but there are multiple parts of the test. This is the reading where the verbal, retell and written responses count towards the score. No prompting is allowed and students must answer all parts of a question in written form. They have to interpret the question and respond to it completely providing text evidence. Please have conversations with your child and remind them about how important it is for them to be mindful about what they’re reading and the questions that they are responding to in written form. We’ve been working on providing text evidence and details all school year to support our thoughts, so I’m sure that they will do their best!
Reading- This week we will read a Scholastic News article about the Vikings and review text features and how they help with reading comprehension.
Math- We will review the different multiplication properties we have learned for the multiplication unit. Students will use the following properties (commutative, associative, and the distributive property) to solve equations and word problems. Students are encouraged to continue studying their multiplication facts even if it’s not assigned for homework. They can practice their times tables on Mobymax facts to reinforce their facts.
Science- We will finish learning about landforms and the content vocabulary. Students will be tested on the content vocabulary at the end of the week.
IReady-it is recommended that students spend a minimum of 45 minutes each week on IReady to skill build and close any gaps they might have. Students can work on assignments or the IReady material. There are two boxes to choose from.
Mobymax is an additional resource the students can use to help build their reading comprehension skills using fiction and nonfiction related materials. They can expand their vocabulary and learn about science and social studies content specific material. It is a great resource that is provided by our school district.
