WorldSkills UK Graphic Design Pre-Competition Activity

Context/Background
Octagon Studio is a multimedia company specialising in producing and delivering Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)* solutions and products for mobile and wearable devices.
One of the new product lines from Octagon are themed packs of 4D+ flashcards, which interact with a 4D+ mobile app to activate an animated AR sequence within the mobile phone screen.
These card packs are aimed at primary school aged children and their families, and each
pack takes a soft educational theme seeking to engage children in learning as they play.
One of these themes is ‘Space’, with individual cards within this pack running animated AR sequences which explore such iconic space environments as the Earth and the International Space Station in orbit; and the Soyuz rocket during take-off.
Card packs went on commercial release during winter 2016 and will tie in with a UK Space Agency children’s health and fitness campaign inspired by astronaut Tim Peake. Octagon Studio have also created an interactive postcard for Tim’s campaign which works in the same way as the card packs.
*Augmented is a live direct or indirect view of a physical real world environment whose elements are augmented (supplemented by) computer generated sensory input such as sound, video or graphics.
Mandatory Branding
A set of branding guidelines are supplied as digital files on your desktop. The logo must be used as a central component of the design for all presentation items. You must comply with branding guidelines in your application of all other aspects of the design graphics. Your choice of colours must also reflect the colour ranges used within the range of assets supplied in your supporting pack.
Supplied with this brief
A pack of 4D+ AR Space Cards and downloadable app.
Technical specifications and branding guidelines can be found in the accompanying, technical specifications documents. All relevant materials are included in this zip File.
Task 1 Branded design concept for reverse side of cards
AR content and technology is currently focused on one side of each card with explanatory copy relating to the space scenario in the form of simple black and white wording on the reverse side of the card.
The client believes that there is an opportunity to increase and extend sales of these card packs by adding in an element of gamification or collectability to the series; inspired by other card packs such as Top Trumps, or Football cards.
Your task is to re-purpose and re-design the reverse sides of cards within the Space pack to achieve this. You will need to develop a strong and coherent visual design format which keeps a consistent look and feel across the pack whilst allowing you to individualise cards within the pack to fit in with your game or collectible function. The design format you create should appeal to young users and their families, whilst complementing the existing graphic assets of the 4D+ card pack range, and branding guidelines. You must include the 4D+ space logo as a mandatory element within your design.
Design sheets should reflect initial ideas and their development through to final artwork for at least 3 example cards from the pack. You should include an explanation on your design sheets of how the game/collectible element of the pack will work.
In addition to your proposal for cards from within the Space pack, you should also include an example of how your format could add value to an augmented reality Tim Peake postcard.
Task 1 Deliverables
Design sheets showing at least 3 from your gamified/collectibles reverse side card pack.
Evidence of how you have taken initial ideas to final designs.
Full colour artwork for your 3 example cards and your Tim Peak postcard.
Clear evidence of how ‘collectability’ and/or ‘gamification’ have been considered as part of the overall design solution
Task 2 - Packaging
Your second design challenge is to re-imagine the packaging for your upgraded card pack which continues your design format and style from your card design concept.
You are provided with a standardized net on which you should create a full-sized artwork for the packaging. A full colour physical prototype should be produced
Task 2 - Deliverables
