Examinations for Credit: French

A French test worth 12 credits will be given in Smith 431 on Saturday,February 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Returned missionaries and non-natives whohave hadnon-academic experience withthe language can take the test. The test can be taken only once.

Grades: You earn letter grades for French 101, 102, 201 (12 credits of written exam). You can accept or refuse any grade. A grade of C or better can be accepted as a letter grade, converted to Pass or rejected. Pass grades give credit for the class, but do not change your GPA

Cost: $30.00

Before you take the exam you must do three things:

1. Sign up for the test. The sign –up sheet is on the bulletin board by Smith 450.

2. At Smith 450 pick up the "Application for Special Exam".

3. Bring the filled in and signed application form to the test.

Preparation: The test is equivalent to the final exam in French 201. To prepare for it, you should review the following concepts. (Additional concepts may be included on the test.)

1. Contractions: au, B la, B l' aux -- de la, de l', du, des

2. Passé Composé of most verbs, (conjugated withLtre or avoir)

3. How to form questions, especially by inversion (Guy, parle-t-il avec elle?)

4. Conjugation of regular verbs (-er, -ir,-re types in all tenses)

5. Passé Simple (Be able to recognize it. No need to write it)

6. Plural of nouns

7. Imparfait/Plus-que-parfait (Je parlais/J'avaisparlé, J'étaisallé, etc.)

8. Direct object pronouns (me, te, le, la, nous, vous, les) (What they replace and

where they go relative to the verb)

9. Indirect object pronouns (me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur) (see # 8)

10. Order and position of multiple pronouns in all situations.

11. Possessive adjectives (mon, ma, mes, etc. and possession by use of de

( Lavoiturede Marie, La mPre du garçon, etc.)

12. Possessive pronouns (le mien, les siennes, la vôtre, les vôtres, etc.)

13. Present of the subjunctive. (Ilveutque nous ayonsnosstylos.)*

14. Agreement of Adjectives with nouns, past participles with subjects and with direct object pronouns.)

15. Expressions of quantity (beaucoup de, etc) and the Partitive (some any)

16. Négation (ne. . . pas, ne. . . jamais, ne. . . plus, personne ne . . . etc.)

17. The two futures (proche: Je vaisaller and simple: J'irai)

18. Conditional and past conditional (I would go. I would have gone)

19. The pronoun y, what it replaces and its varied meanings.

20. The pronoun en, what it replaces and its varied meanings.

21. Reflexive and pronominal verbs) (Je m'arrLte, Elle se met B, Ons'envaetc.)

22. Relative pronouns: lequel(and its varied forms), dont, oj, qui, que, etc.

23. Celui, ceux, celle, celles-ci, etc. and their meanings.

24. Present participle (Le Gérondif) (Parlant avec lui, en travaillant, etc.)

25. Agreement of tenses. (Si j'avaiseu le temps, j'yseraisallée.) S'il y va, j'yiraiaussi.etc.

Some things you do not have to know:

You do not have to write the passé simple, only recognize its meaning.

You do not have to know the futurantérieur. (I will have seen her. . . . Je l'auraivue.)

*As for the subjunctive, only the present tense is included on the test.
