Program –Tom Cannon – Park Director for City of East Jordan
Tom highlighted a variety of projects that are either currently going on, or are in the master plan for completing in the city parks. The city has 13 park facilities totaling over 100 acres of property. The downtown Harbor / Marina had a full utility upgrade in 2009 and gas pumps were replaced. A 3rd dredging in 4 years is planned for this fall. Dredging will continue until a retaining wall is allowed to prevent sand from entering the harbor. There are many government agencies overlooking this issue. The TouristPark has had 7 back-to-back weeks of full capacity and is on pace for over 1,200 reservations this year. A new office was installed this year and there are plans to upgrade the log building with restroom and kitchen facilities. CommunityPark hosted 5 different little league tournaments this summer. A skating rink will be easier to maintain this winter and the sledding hill will be ready for use. There are lots of big plans for Sportsman’s Park as funds are available. A new Park and Recreation Master Plan will include many upgrades to lighting docks, the fishing pond, and improving kayak access. This is a very attractive park for newer grants because of the surrounding natural resources. The Boat Launch will continue to need dredging each spring, annual fees are helping to cover the cost of this.
