Defending the Wing T

Understand the Wing T Offense.

Ø Designed to create conflicts -

à through multiple formations with the use of motion or shifts;

à with the threat of an outside run, an inside run and an off tackle run on all actions;

à with the use of misdirection with multiple counters and blocking variations;

à with the threat of multiple option plays with a power running game to compliment misdirection; and

à with play action passes to and away from flow.

Ø Base Wing T block is down – kick out

Ø Be sure you are able to adjust quickly to formations where you are out manned (i.e. unbalanced).

Wing T Keys

Ø Use not as hard and fast rules but as tendencies.

Formation Key (by play)

- To Wing

- To HB

Motion Key (Over or Thru)

- Wing T usually has a high tendency to run to TE/Wing side, with motion, tendency is to motion direction.

- Motion tends to favor run vs. pass, especially over motion.

Slot Key

- Slot balances run game, but pass side is limited away from slot.

Wing Slot Key

- Wing Slot has an inside running game (trap/gut) and Option/Reverse running game.

Guard Key

- “The guards take you to the play”. True reads on Drive, Down, Reach, Trap and Pull.

False Guard Key plays

- MLB to Wing side reads through to FB.

(Belly X; Buck Away; Sweep Opposite, etc.)

Our Wing T Game Plan

Ø Starts with the OLB and DT’s. Stay flat on reach blocks; Squeeze down blocks; & Spill kick out blocks.

Ø MLB’s read guards. Replace defenders across your face (color in the hole).

Ø Our base package MUST be the plan. No tricks or schemes.
