We watched the film "Ocamo is my Town" about Yanomamo people living at a mission in the Venezuelan Amazon. How has their culture changed since the arrival of the mission? What aspects of culture have remained intact? What are some of the factors and risks when an indigenous culture has prolonged contact with a nation state?
I feel this is a good question because it is important to study the effects that contact between two different cultures has on culture and personality.
This is a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "What are likely to be the effects of this change on the modal personality of the next generation of Yanomamo people?

What is the difference between sex and gender? Identify some of the stereotypes traditionally associated
with masculinity and femininity.
I feel this is a valid question because understanding that more than biology contributes to the differences
between men and women is integral to fully appreciating and understanding the roles we're socialized
into.
This is also a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include, in addition, a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "How does the sex/gender stereotyping affect the personality development of children? Pick two cultures that differ in the the nature of their 'sex/gender stereotyping' and discuss that effect."

The Amish are a group of people that live and thrive within their own type of community. Explain who the Amish are, and why we have studied them. Make sure to include and explain terms such as Demut, Hocmut and any others you may find important.
Natalie Miller
This is also a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include, in addition, a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "How do the concepts such as Demut, Hocmut and the like relate to Amish world view?"

Describe the upbringing of Jimmy Jackson's life, including how he got stared as a medicine man, and how he impacted not only his community but the outside community as well.
This is also a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include, in addition, a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "How does Jimmy Jackson's belief in the supernatural reflect the world view of Anishinabe/Chippewa people."
Kelly M Erb
Explain how shamans learn their skills, and why this was so important in the Hmong Shaman video, and the video Children's Magical Death. How does this kind of teaching relate to culture and personality?

List 4 characterizes of each birth order, then compare and contrast the traits of your particular birth order with your personality.

Some of the videos we watched were about the Hmong, the Amish, and the Yanomamo; their ways of life
has been affected by Western culture/civilization. Pick one of these videos and explain the affects that the
western culture has had on these people and if it affected them in a positive or negative way? Also what
can they do in order to preserve their own culture while having these influences present?
This is also a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include, in addition, a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "How are the effects of Western culture/civilization likely to affect the world view of the children in the next generation?"

Chapter seven is about beliefs, motives, and values. My question is: Why should we study values cross-culturally? What are values and how do they relate to culture?
I think this is a good question because learning about other's values is important and like our text points out, it can encourage us to enrich our lives by reconsidering our own personal values.
Brianna M Smith
In chapter 10 it discusses intercultural relations in a shrinking world. My question is, does warfare have an influence on internal violence? If so, describe what this influence is.
I think that this is a good question because it is something we not only read about, but is in our everyday lives.
This is also a good question. If I were asking it (on a Culture and Personality exam) I would include, in addition, a specific reference to the personality/psychology dimension, something like, "Based on the guest lecture by Zahid G., how would you characterize the influence of warfare and internal violence on the personality development of an individual?"

How does living in a different cultural world affect ones perception of events; i.e., Hallowell's discussion about culture affecting psychological worlds tied in with Kurosawa's Rashomon Effect. (Imagine, perhaps, if a Yanomamo person witnessed the same robbery as a Hmong Shaman.)
I think this is a good question, because it requires knowledge of all of the cultures we've looked at, and an understanding of how other people view things and report differently based upon where they live.

How would an outsider view the practice of a medicine man when compared to a medical doctor? In what way could the outsider show ethnocentrism?
Ashley Iacona
What are the functions of the left side of the brain and the right side of the brain? Describe how split brain people manipulate the two sides since they are not connected.
To this question as e-mailed I would add something like, "And how will research into subjects like this likely affect the future of Culture and Personality studies."
