Lutz Parents Group Meeting
October 10, 2016
Meeting called to order at 6:37 p.m.
Principal’s Report: John Nader told us about an MISD forum, moderated by TV/Radio personality Tim Skubick, with candidates for the two open slots on the State Board of Education. The candidates talked on everything from guns in schools to charter schools. John also recounted a town hall meeting with state legislators on Mental Health Care reform. Gov. Rick Snyder wants to revise section 298 of the mental health code to privatize community mental health services. Groups representing Macomb County parents feel privatization would be devastating for our kids and families. About 50 parents provided very moving testimony.
He also reminded us that Friday, Oct. 14 is a full day of school, Thursday, Oct.27 is our Halloween Dance and the day on which Germack Nut orders are due.
Old Business:
Our account balance remains at $9,043.35
- Halloween Dance: Not much to talk about. We still need to order bracelets and plates. Not much more to be done until we have a head count and can order the pizza. Nicole will redo tickets using a template from last year.
- New Volunteers: 230 parents are on the email list. We also got a good response for volunteers.
- Event Committee chairs: Ilene B. will chair the Winter Dance. Holiday Lunch is more of a group effort. We will send out a new volunteer request form in the winter.
- Fundraising: Carson’s Coupon Book flyers went out, sales are slow but likely to pick up closer to the actual store sales. Debbie says Germack Nut flyers to go home Oct. 11. The Classic Car Show will be June 24th. We decide to put Lottery Tree fundraiser on the December agenda, as we have lots of fundraising going on now.
- Caleb and Katie have agreed to conduct a Sexuality and Special Needs presentation, possibly the first week in December, either Monday or Tuesday the 5th or 6th.
New Business
- The group agreed previously that having a specific fundraising goal was a good idea, and we discussed working toward providing an outdoor covered picnic facility, with electrical outlets. This picnic pavilion will be out back, and we will eventually need to get bids on costs.
- Spiritwear: Ann Martin agrees to handle this, but will need a partner to help. Still up in the air as to when the sale will occur and what will be offered.
- Other: Lauren K. says student council nomination forms will be coming home soon and are due back Oct. 20. Campaigning starts Oct. 27. On Oct. 30, candidates will show campaign I-movies to the school. The election will be in November. Spirit week will be the time for the Giving Tree, where donations are sought for holiday stockings for people in need. The stockings will be stuffed on Dec. 5 from 9-10 a.m.
John recommends that everyone check out the new kitchen. It is almost done. Darryl brings the group’s attention to a student who needs help with his wheelchair and apparently has been missing school because of chair issues. John will look into this.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are Nov. 17. Is LPG providing food? In years past, we’ve usually paid for subs and chips.
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m. Our next meeting is Nov. 14.
