·  The Rotary Experience. Participation is an important part of the Rotary experience. Participation comes in many forms.

Regular Attendance. Rotary International defines a “member in good standing” as someone that maintains a 50% attendance rate at regular meetings, and 50% of those meetings attended must be at your home club. If you miss a meeting, you are encouraged to “make-up” the missed meeting. A make-up can be accomplished by attending a club or district 5100 committee meeting, a board meeting, participating in a club service project, visiting a cyber club on the web, attending a district or international Rotary meeting or by visiting another Rotary club. You have to do a make-up two weeks prior or two weeks after the regular club meeting that you have missed.

o  Participation. Participating in our Community & Club Service projects adds to the richness of the Rotary experience.

§  Community Service projects may include: Highway Clean-up (2 hours, twice per year). Flipping burgers at the Cutsforth’s Thriftway Cruise-in (2 hour shift, one day per year). Dictionary distribution (distribute dictionaries to 2nd graders, 1 hour, once per year). All are not mandatory, but participation is encouraged.

§  Club Service projects and committees may include: Membership committee.

Funds for Local Activities

The Rotary Club of Canby has its own 501c-3 charitable foundation. We fund this primarily from the 3-on-3 basketball tournament and auction. We also encourage members to give directly to the Canby Rotary Foundation. Typically, Canby Rotary’s charitable budget exceeds $30,000 per year. This foundation gives several scholarships away each year to local high school seniors entering college, as well as renewing existing scholarships. In addition, the foundation provides gifts to local organizations (schools, community projects, etc.).

§  Christmas Fund (voluntary cash contributions go toward food baskets, blankets, etc.).

§  Nothing-But-Net 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on the last weekend of July. The 3-on-3 Tournament is our largest fund raising event of the year for the Canby Rotary Foundation. Members must participate in a variety of pre-event committees such as bracketing, registration, donation & sponsorship solicitations, and day-of-event activities such as set-up and tear-down, score keeping, etc. If a member does not participate in two out of the three activities (pre-tournament activity, the tournament or tear-down), there is a mandatory $150 “buy-out” fee.

§  The Auction is our second largest fund raiser for the year.

§  50/50. We sell chances for a 50/50 drawing each week at our meetings - $1 for one ticket, $2 for three tickets. One ticket is drawn each week and the ticket owner pulls a marble from a bag. If the ticket holder pulls the black marble, they share the pot of money 50/50 with the club. Typically, the pot is worth several hundred dollars (participation suggested, but not required). This is for Rotary Club of Canby MEMBERS ONLY.

§  Fines. A highlight of our weekly meetings is the fun and fellowship brought about by fines assessed against our members. A member can be fined for such things as having a picture in the newspaper, buying a new car, taking a vacation or being caught by doing or saying something ‘silly’. Fines are typically one or two dollars, but multiple “things” can add up to several dollars at any given meeting (normally does not exceed $5 per meeting).

§  Brags. Contributions are accepted from members that want to brag about such things as a birthday, promotion, child, grandchild, anniversary or anything that a member wants to announce and make a small donation toward our charitable activities.

Funds for International Activities

Fund raising for international activities is coordinated through The Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary International. Funds raised through the Rotary Foundation support worldwide efforts in the areas of health (PolioPlus), sanitation, clean water, literacy and more.

§  Paul Harris Fellow. The most common avenue to contribute to The Rotary Foundation is to work toward becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. To become a Fellow a member must contribute $1,000 toward their “Paul Harris”. Typically, members take several years to meet the $1,000 level. Rotary encourages members to become “sustaining members”. Sustaining members contribute $100 each year toward their “Paul Harris”.

§  EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year). The purpose of this initiative is twofold: 1) Encourage Every Rotarian to participate in a Rotary Foundation humanitarian or educational project that truly makes a difference in the world; 2) Encourage Every Rotarian to contribute at least $100 to the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund, Every Year.

§  Paul Harris Society. Members of the Paul Harris Society contribute $1,000 per year to The Rotary Foundation.

§  Benefactors. Benefactors of The Rotary Foundation bequest a portion of their estate to The Rotary Foundation payable upon the closing of a Rotarians estate.

§  Major Donors. Major Donors are members that have contributed $10,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation, Permanent Fund.
