------

Exemptions:

(APPLICABLE ONLY FOR STUDENTS APPEARING FOR PQE)

Candidates with relevant professional or educational qualifications validated by this Institute will be able to apply for exemptions, on subject for subject basis. The assumption behind granting an exemption is that, if a student were to take the paper, they would have sufficient knowledge and understanding to achieve a pass. The decision is based on evidence of prior learning, demonstrated by the achievement of a maritime –related qualification. If an exemption is granted, a student does not have to sit the relevant ICS subject exam, but is credited with a pass.

Subjects

Exemptions can only be granted against the Institute’s Professional Qualifying Exams (PQEs). The Institute’s Education and Training Committee has mapped ICS subjects against a range of international qualifications to show which exemptions apply to each qualification. Some of the Institute’s 16 subjects cannot be exempted as their content is regarded as essential to qualifying for membership. The following subjects can be exempted:

Introduction to Shipping(IS)

Legal Principles in Shipping Business(LPS)

Economics of Sea Transport and International Trade(EST)

Logistics and Multi-modal Transport(LMT)

Port and Terminal Management(PTM)

Marine Insurance(MI)

Shipping Law(SL)

Shipping Finance(SF)

For Introduction to Shipping a student qualifies for an exemption if they have completed either two years employment in the shipping industry, or one year in the industry as well as passing the Institute’s nine month course Understanding Shipping.

Maximum Number of Exemptions

The Education and Training Committee (ETC) has decided that a maximum of three exemptions should be awarded to any individual student. Some qualifications have in the past qualified for four exemptions. This will continue to be the case but students who have passed these qualifications will have to select three out of the four subjects. It will not be possible to gain an exemption for Legal Principles in Shipping BusinessandShipping Lawtogether.
