Course Description:

Studio In Art is a full year foundational course that fulfills the art/music graduation requirement. It is the prerequisite course for Advanced Art 1 and Advertising Design. It is the first course of the drawing/painting sequence that culminates with AP Art. Studio-In-Art includes drawing, painting and printmaking. Emphasis is placed on elements and principles of design and development of observational drawing skills, composition and exploration of materials and tools.

Student Objectives:

Projects are based on a district wide art studio curriculum that reflects New York State standards and outcomes as well as interdisciplinary core curriculum topics from a variety of high school curriculum areas.

Students will experiment with a variety of new concepts, skills and contexts while developing technical skills.

Skills in art criticism will be fostered by group critiques and self assessment.

Develop technical skills within a multitude of medias.

Identify forms of artistic expression as well as their social, historical and cultural contexts.

Investigation and practicing a variety of approaches engaging students with art making processes.

Grading Procedures and Policies:

Projects are based on a district wide art studio curriculum that reflects New York State standards and outcomes as well as interdisciplinary core curriculum topics from a variety of high school curriculum areas.

Each week a series of journal and project assignments will be handed out with criteria based evaluation procedures. Each series will have deadlines. Time management for project work is challenging and a necessary skill in a studio environment.

Journaling and sketchbook graded assignments may include work done outside of school hours and/or for homework.

A final exam will account for 20% of your final average.

There will always be a rubric handed out at the start of each project outlining specific expectations.

Participation is essential to your progress in this class. Participation means showing up on time, prepared to learn. Attendance is expected and required. Should you miss class please contact me as soon as possible. Contribution to class discussions.

Required Materials

Sketchbook (preferably spiral bound) Sketchbooking a large part of this course.

Sizes can either be 8 ½ x11 or 9x12. Please bring to class with you daily.

You will be expected to work to your highest potential, show consistent improvement and strive for an excellent portfolio. Excellent attendance and behavior that adheres to the District Code of Conduct will eliminate many issues that distract from great student performance.
