Winter Handyperson

Job Description

Salary: £24,252 per annum (including London Weighting)

Hours: one day (7 hours) per week

Contract length: until 31st March 2017

Location: London Borough of Wandsworth

Responsible to: Handyperson Co-ordinator at Age UK Wandsworth


Main purpose of the job

·  To provide warm home and energy efficiency interventions and carry out other Handyperson tasks as required

·  To carry out work in the homes of older people to a high standard and within agreed time scales

Responsibilities of the post

Specific work

·  To carry out jobs as detailed but not limited to:

o  Fitting draught excluders

o  Fitting radiator foils

o  Bleeding radiators

o  Checking boilers and advising on use

o  Putting up and taking down curtains

o  Putting up blinds / curtain tracks

o  Advising on energy efficiency

o  Assessing loft insulation

o  Fitting secondary glazing film

o  Changing light bulbs

o  Installing key safes

o  Fitting grab-rails

o  Tacking down or taping loose, rucked-up or fraying carpets

o  Relocating and/or fixing trailing flexes

o  Moving furniture

General

·  To work within the Handyperson procedures

·  To work within Age UK Wandsworth’s policies and maintain principle of confidentiality and equal opportunity in all aspects of the work.

·  To ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner and that the Health and Safety policy is adhered to

·  To leave the site in a clean and tidy condition

·  To carry out duties on a day to day basis with the minimum of supervision

·  To be responsible for purchasing necessary materials and obtaining payments from customers where required

·  To ensure that job sheets are completed accurately

·  To report to and to work under the supervision of the Project Co-ordinator and to attend and contribute to support and supervision sessions.

·  To help raise awareness amongst professionals and teams working with older people on issues in connection with repairs in the home

·  To assist with administration in connection with the post

·  To help publicise the service to ensure that householders and their friends or family, and professionals and teams working with older people are aware of the service and how to contact it

·  To be responsible for keeping receipts and submitting expense forms on a monthly basis

·  To keep the Coordinator informed of any issues that they need to be aware of

Additional requirements

·  To work as an integral member of Age UK Wandsworth staff team

·  To attend meetings as required

·  To provide support to staff in promotional aspects of the service

·  To attend training courses as required

·  To carry out such other duties as may be required which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post

The post will involve travel throughout the London Borough of Wandsworth

An enhanced DBS check is required for the role.


Person specification

Experience

·  Experience in carrying out a wide range of minor housing repairs (E)

·  Experience of working with older people and an understanding of their needs (D)

Skills and knowledge

·  Ability to undertake a wide range of work around the home to a high standard (E)

·  Ability to work on own initiative, with limited supervision and accept responsibility for own work (E)

·  The ability to organise and manage a full workload and to work to deadlines (E)

·  Good listening and verbal communication skills (E)

·  Ability to complete forms (E)

·  Ability to travel independently throughout the borough (E)

·  Ability to work as part of a team (D)

·  Ability to liaise with and purchase goods from suppliers (D)

Other requirements

·  Able to climb stairs, step ladders, etc (E)

·  Access to use of own vehicle (D)

·  Full driving licence (D)

·  Own tools (D)
