DOBSON — Central Middle School hosted the district MathCounts competition Thursday, January 12, to prepare students for the regional event at Wake Forest University on February 11.

Even though the Meadowview Magnet Middle School team was declared the overall winner of the district competition, all four SCS middle schools will participate at the regional level. Thursday’s event was great practice for all teams.

The competition lasted about two-and-a-half hours, using the same format that will be used at the regionals. Each segment was timed, some done individually and some as a team. Some segments allowed calculators and some did not. Each segment comprised the scoring for individual and team honors.

After three graded segments, the final part was the Countdown Round, which is done in a game show fashion. One student from each team competes to be the fastest to correctly answer each of four problems with a maximum time of 45 seconds, with no calculator. The Countdown Rounddoes not go toward team totals. It’s done for entertainment and bragging rights. Meadowview Magnet Middle also won the Countdown Round!

Congratulations to all teams for a great competition.
