Notts 10 Mile Road Race: Friday, June 6, 2014

Sponsored by Polycasa and Plastics Plus Ltd

A generous cash prize of a record £500 for the winner of the men’s race produced the most competitive Notts 10 for some years on a warm and sunny Friday evening at the HolmePierrepont National Water Sports Centre. A group of six runners set the pace for the first five miles and all finished inside last year’s winning time. Toby Spencer, Coventry Godiva, broke clear over the last two miles to win in 50:07, the fastest winning time since 2001. Previous winner Alastair Watson, Notts AC was second 50:28 with Neil Renault, Edinburgh AC, third 50.30, followed by James Mee, Heanor Running Club, 50.47, 2 hours 17 minutes marathon runner Ben Livesey, Birchfield Harriers 50.50 and Ryan Holroyd, Staffordshire Moorlands AC, 51:32. Mark Sands, Unattached, was first over 40 veteran in 56.29 from Michael McGinty, Derwent Runners, 56.42 and Christopher Hollinshead, Stafford Harriers, 58.22. Richard Sims, Sinfin Running Club, led the over 50 category in 64.50, from Dicky Wilkinson, Long Eaton RC, 66.41 and David Walsh, Redhill Road Runners, 67.21. Vic Shirley, Unattached, was first over 60 in 67.42.

The women’s race was a duel between Notts AC’s Amy Whithead, who has been selected to represent England in the marathon in this year’s Commonwealth Games and previous winner, Juliet Potter, Charnwood AC. Whitehead carried through an impressive run in the London Marathon when she was the first Briton to win in 57.23 with Potter second in 58.25 from last year’s winner, NickiNealon, Huncote Harriers, 62.12. Amy Whitehead and NickiNealon were first over 35 and 45 respectively, with Lisa Deacon, Notts AC second in 67.34 in over 35 from Katy Simpson, Southwell RC, 69.28. Serena Bignell, HolmePierrepont RC was second over 45 in 71.34 from Penny Andrews, Rugby and Northampton AC, 74.04.

Notts AAA Summer League 2014.

Well done, great turnout at HolmePierrepont for the second summer league race. Usual windy conditions did not deter our senior men from putting in a splendid performance to finish first team on the night and now first team after two races. Rob Keal had a great run to finish 4th ably supported by John Muddeman 7th, and new guy Luke Wigman who finished 21st. The rest of the team was Matt Judson 23rd, Jon-Phillip Seymour 28th and Gareth Little 29th. Dave Oxland 31st, Ian Winstanley 32nd and Joe Gardner also ran well to support our leading runners. Big thanks to HPRC for staging the run and providing the excellent course and facilities.

Not sogreat a turnout for the 5m 3rd race at Newstead Abbey organised by Redhill Road Runners. Only 3 senior men under 40 turned out needing the veterans to make up the 6 man team. An undulating course with sharp turns on a warm sunny night soon had the runners stretched out with some great competition up front. Big thanks to those that turned out and Redhill RR for putting on the race..

LADIES ROAD AND CROSS COUNTRY – JUNE 2014

SUMMER LEAGUE – HOLME PIERREPONT 7.5.2014

As usual, the HolmePierrepontWatersports Centre, proved a challenge for the athletes competing in this 5 mile road race. The wind down the home straight was strong and many runners tried to shield themselves behind others to help not being blown too much towards the lake. However, the ladies braved the challenge and performed extremely well. Another win for our senior ladies, which leaves them continuing to lead the overall competition, with our Vets team in 3rd place. The results were as follows:-

Great East Anglia 10k/British Masters Championship 10k road race Kings Lynn Sunday 4th May 2014

1st Aaron Scott (not yet Masters!) 31.11 34th Andy Wetherill (Redhill) 34.30 1st M55

61st David Oxland 35.52 2nd M60 245th Jane Pidgeon 42.03 4th W50

The inclusion of the British Masters race in this race turned it from a fun run to a serious competition and Aaron had to run hard to stay 6 seconds ahead of the first M40 runner.

Despite breaking 36 minutes for the second time in his life, David Oxland was second M60 such is the standard of this age group these days.

Jane Pidgeon made a rare excursion up to this distance and despite lack of full fitness was only just out of the medals in her age group.

Athletes Testing at Loughborough

Hi, my name is Toby Turner – I’m a ‘Sport and Exercise Psychology’ postgraduate student at Loughborough University currently recruiting both male and female adult (18+) participants for my Masters research project. The purpose of the project is to compare mood-related outcomes of exercising in different environments (outdoor versus indoor on a treadmill). I will begin to collect data in the forthcoming weeks – participants will be required to run 6km on two separate occasions (one in each setting). The outdoor 6km will take place at Outwoods, Loughborough and the indoor 6km will be conducted in the fitness suite at the Radmoor Centre, Loughborough. Please contact me via e-mail () or on 07549932056 for further details if you are interested. Participation from members of Notts AC would be greatly appreciated.

My name is James Fleming and I am an MSc sport nutrition student here at Loughborough University. I am currently doing a research project on the effect of different meals on appetite responses and I am desperately short of participants. I am looking for males, non smoker between 18-35 years old. The study involves 4 visits to Clyde Williams lab, 1 visit will be a familiarisation, in the other 3 you will receive different amounts and food. If you do take part you get a free VO2max test, free body fat analysis and nutritional guidance. In response for participating in this study I would be happy to provide members with nutritional analysis and advice for those that want it. If you could pass this onto your members that would be brilliant. If interested please contact me . Thank you for your time
