Contact

/ Parents or guardians may contact me by calling (817) 306-4250 and leaving a message in the main office. I will return all calls. You may also contact me by e-mail at .

Conference

/ My conference period is 3rd period.
Supplies
/ Binder (1 binder will be used for all subjects and classes), 1 composition notebook, wide-ruled notebook paper, 1 package of gluesticks, pencils, red pen for grading and correcting work, Kleenex, 1 pack of 3x5 index cards, 1 package of 4 “AAA” batteries, and additional supplies may be required throughout the school year.
Algebra I
/ Algebra I is the honors class for 8th grade Math. If you pass this class at the end of the school year, you will receive 1 credit for high school Math. However, if you fail to maintain an 80% in class or fail to meet the honor code standards then you may be removed, placed in a regular 8th grade Pre-Algebra class, and repeat Algebra I next year.
End Of Course (EOC)
/ Algebra I students will take the STAAR End of Course (EOC). This is the 9th grade STAAR test for Algebra I. For state graduation requirements students must pass this exam.
Textbook
/ Textbooks, if needed, may be checked out through our school library as needed.

iPads

/ 8th Grade:
Students who pay the deposit will be issued an iPad to take to and from school. Students are expected to bring it to class, and use for appropriate work in the classroom and homework. They will be responsible for returning it at the end of the year.
7th Grade:
Students will have daily school use of an iPad. The iPad will only be used at school, and returned by the end of each day.
Grades
/ District Policy
30% Daily grades (class work, homework, and participation)
50% Tests (quizzes, tests, and major projects)
20% 6-Weeks exam (6 weeks test)
NOTICE: Tests are 70% of your overall grade. So, if you do not do your homework to practice and prepare for the tests, then you will probably fail the tests and this class.
Classroom Rules
/ Lucyle Collins conduct rules:
1.  Be in class on time and ready to participate.
2.  Bring all supplies every day.
3.  Kindness is a priority. Respect other people and their property.
4.  Follow directions the first time they are given.
5.  Gum is not allowed.
Consequences
/ It is important for students to participate and be respectful in class. I will not tolerate students disrupting their education and the education of their classmates.
1st offense – Warning
2nd offense – one on one conference with student
3rd offense – parent phone call
4th offense – conference with student, 25 creeds will be written by student, and parent phone call
5th offense – After School Detention is assigned and student ID is taken up (loss of ID privileges)
6th offense – office referral
Warm-ups
/ Warm ups will be done daily on the iPads. We will use a free classroom app called edmodo. The warm ups will be combine to create our 6 weeks test grade.
Absences and Tardies
/ It is the student’s responsibility to make-up assignments, quizzes, tests, or projects missed during an absence.
·  Classwork and homework assignments will be found in the homework binder. It is the student’s responsibility to get the assignment from the binder whenever returning from an absence.
·  Quizzes and Tests can be made up before or after school. Let me know a day before if you are going to come before or after school to make-up a test.
A student is tardy if they are not in their seat when the tardy bell rings.

Binders

And

Notebooks

/ Students will be required to keep the following contents in their Math section of their binders:
·  Syllabus
·  8th and 9th grade mathematics charts
·  Activities, assignments and tests per 6 weeks
·  Math journal in class.
·  Binders and/or notebooks may sometimes be used on tests, so it is important to keep up with the binders. They will be a valuable resource for you.
Tests /

3 tests will be given per 6 weeks. All tests can be cumulative, which means concepts must be retained all year long. The state of Texas does not care when you learned a concept. If it was taught to you during the 8th grade then it will be tested on STAAR!

Test Re-takes

/ Students may retake a test ONE time, regardless of the first score. We will accept the higher of the two grades. Retakes are made on the student’s own time before or after school. Communication is important to setting up a time with coaches and teachers.

Flipped Classroom/ Homework

/ Flipped Classroom – Students will receive some of their lecture at home through video or audio. They will be responsible for knowing the material the following day in class to participate in assignments or projects. The videos are not meant for mastery! They are meant to introduce and reinforce content.
·  Students will have homework most nights and weekends. Time may not be given in class to complete homework.
·  When a graded assignment is returned to the student, a student may correct any missed problem for ½-credit for each incorrect answer. The due date for corrections is always the last Thursday of a term.
·  For every day you are absent, you have a day to make-up the work.
·  Late work (work not completed on time) may be turned in 1 day after the due date. Late assignments may receive a maximum grade of a 70. On the 2nd day after the due date the assignment will receive the grade of a 0 and you can no longer receive credit.
·  Extra credit will not be offered on individualized basis to make-up or replace assignments that were never turned in on time. Extra credit may be offered to a whole class.

Pencils

/ All assignments and tests must be completed in pencil only. Assignments written in pen must be redone in pencil before turning in.

Tutoring

/ Tutoring will be available upon request. Make arrangements for tutoring at least one day in advance so that I may check my schedule for any conflicts and you can arrange for a ride home.

I have read and understand the expectations for Mr. Gaona’s Pre-Algebra class.
