I acknowledge receipt of your recent correspondence and have noted that you intend submitting your research output for examination. Regarding submission dates the following rules apply:

  • If submission takes place after 15June, the successful student might only graduate in Autumn of the following year.
  • If submission takes place after 15November, the successful student might only graduate in Spring of the following year.
  • If submission takes place after the end of February, the successful student will graduate in Spring, and will have to re-register and pay the full tuition fees.
  • If you are not currently a registered student, examination will be delayed until proof of registration had been submitted by you

Your request for submission has been referred, inter alia, for the appointment of a panel of examiners and it could take some time. You will be informed of approval of submission in due course.

In order to avoid any possible delay in having your thesis examined, kindly ensure that you comply with all the requirements regarding the following:

  • the thesis and the submission thereof, as indicated in the enclosed extract
  • the exact wording of the approved title in the correct format on the title page as indicated in the example attached hereto
  • the limitationof the summary to a maximum of 350 words, as well as at least ten key terms listed at the end of the summary
  • the submission of a declaration, signed and dated by you, including your student number on the statement, indicating that the dissertation is your own work
  • a condensed curriculum vitae

KEY TERMS DESCRIBING THE TOPIC OF A DISSERTATION/THESIS

The Executive Committee of Senate decided that in order to assist the Library with retrieval of information, master’s and doctoral students must list approximately ten key terms which describe the topic of the dissertation/thesis at the end of the summary of the dissertation/thesis.

If the dissertation/thesis is not written in English, the key terms in English must be listed at the end of the English summary.

The following is an example of key terms used for a thesis:

EXTRACT FROM THE Procedures forMaster’s and Doctoraldegrees REGARDING THE SUBMISSION OF A DISSERTATION/THESIS

For examination purposes, a candidate must submit three copies of the thesis, bound between soft covers with a glued spine or ringbound, to the Registrar (Academic); provided that the University reserves the right to demand that more than three copies be submitted. The title of the thesis and the name of the candidate must appear on the cover of each examination copy. Candidates are also referred to item 7: Additional copies.

NB:The examination copies must be accompanied by:

(a)the following statement by the candidate:

"I declare that …………………………………………(title of thesis)……………………………………………………………….

is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references". The thesis will not be examined unless this statement has been submitted. (Please see attached form “DECLARATION”).

(b)A doctoral candidate must also submit his/her curriculum vitae (< 350 words).

If a candidate's thesis is not accepted, one or more examination copies may, at the exclusive discretion of the University, be returned to the candidate after the elapse of one year. These copies remain the property of the University.

7.ADDITIONAL COPIES

(1)After approval of the dissertation, and before conferment of the degree, the candidate must submit the text of the dissertation in electronic format to his/her supervisor for uploading to the Unisa Institutional Repository.

(2)A candidate for the LLD degree whose thesis has been accepted is requested to submit electronic version which will be forwarded by the office of the Dean to the library of the Appeal Court.

Please bear in mind that the degree will not be awarded unless the student complies with all the requirements, including the submission of the additional copy, before a date set by the University.
