Volleyball Questions and Answers Volume 1
Question

I have had questions from several coaches regarding plastic "plugs" that players wear in their ears in place of their earrings. Are these legal?
Answer

Not legal. Rule 4-1-7; "Jewelry shall not be worn by players during warm-ups and/or competition." Even though these plugs may be soft plastic, they are still considered jewelry.
Question

We would like to host a Dig Pink, Dig for the Cure, etc. night. Do we need special permission to wear pink jerseys? Use a pink ball?
Answer

Volleyball rules do not prohibit wearing a pink jersey (provided the numbers are legally placed) as volleyball does not have rules regarding home and away jerseys. Rule 3-2-1 now allows a colored ball provided it has the NFHS authenticating mark. Neither of these items would require a waiver.
Question

I thought we could play with a TWO colored ball this year...so last fall I ordered some red & white balls. We had a JV Quad tonight & the official showed me in the rule book where it says "a ball with a minimum of 3 colors". I thought you had said it was a "maximum of 3 colors, one being white". Can you clear this up for me?
Answer

You are correct. Rule 3-2-1 should read "maximum". This correction was included in the rules presentation and is in the list of corrections that everyone was asked to run off from the School & Officials Center.
Question

We had a non-conference match last night and the ref mentioned one of my player's sweatband. It was black with an Underarmor logo. As it is not worn by all players, so it is not part of the uniform. He wasn't sure if this is a legal piece to wear so just mentioned it to me at the end of the night. Can you please clarify for me if she is able to
wear it or should she get some different ones?
Answer

You are correct that a sweatband is not part of the uniform. I'm assuming she's wearing it on her head not her wrist? If it’s worn on her head, then it’s considered a hair control device (Rule 4-1-6) and would be
subject to the 2" wide limitation. I would advise that whether it’s on the wrist or head, the Under Armor logo should not exceed 2 1/4".
Question

Team A returns the ball on their third hit in a soft manner. Can Team B have a double hit on the first hit when they pass the ball to the setter or does the hit from Team A have to be a hard driven hit for Team B to be able to have a double hit to pass the ball to their teammate?
Answer Rule 9-4-8b;

"On ANY first team hit, whether or not the ball is touched by the block." There is not a reference to a "hard drive hit".
Question

Prior to a varsity match while talking with the visiting coach, he noted to me that an official at an earlier varsity match this year had informed him that wearing "active-ankles" is illegal and if his players had them on he would require them to be removed. I informed him that there is no rule against the wearing of "active-ankles" and the prior official was in error (Rule 4-3). Maybe this is just something to mention as there are apparently officials out there that believe "active-ankles" are illegal equipment
Answer Rule 4-1-3;

"Knee and ankle braces, which are unaltered from the manufacturer's original design/production, do not require
additional padding."
