3 Mg – Gingaestética (2005)

(Read: Three milligrams – Gingaestética)

Developed from the concept of abrigo (shelter) in the Brazilian slums , the piece is composed of image fragments arranged and collaged side-by-side, providing an “editing ” that covers all kind of references and quality of movement choices.

The Ginga appears in the body and in the space through the dynamics that keeps the movement of the images all the time ephemeral . As a metaphor to the labyrinth that advances always maintaining the possibility of transformation, where the performers' presence and perspective are the generating elements of instability in the scene .

The project “3 Mg – Gingaestética” was origina ted from the necessity of investigating the brasilidade (what naturally belongs to a native Brazilian) in the body, the aspects that makes us Brazilians, how Brazil is understood by us and b y the foreign ones. With this pointed out horizon we arrived to what became our theoretical reference: the book “A estética da Ginga” (The Aesthetic of the Ginga), written by the architect and urbanist Paola Berenstaein Jaques. The book generously focuses through the architecture and visual arts perspectives, on the aesthetic of the slums in Rio de Janeiro, crossing information with the work of Hélio Oiticica.

“A estética da Ginga” is a surprisingly deep research, which helped us to formulate our own concept of “Ginga” as we investigated concepts such as “Fragment”, “Labyrinth” and “Rhizome” and traversed these investigations with information and specificities of our reality.

The Body

The body presented in this dance is built from the unstandardization of movements. The body is able to change its course quickly. The body inhabits the movement phrases that were built through the image choices that cover several references. It is a body that is associated to the idea of struggling for survival and that reflects the Brazilian precarious daily reality.
