Course Description:

Elements of Literature 5th Course is the classroom book. This year, we will utilize Common Core Curriculum which uses American Literature to focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. While critical thinking is essential to the course, we will review basic grammar and the writing process. Literary genres include historical text, short stories, novels, poetry, non-fiction, and drama. Composition and language arts focus on analysis, persuasion, research, and creative writing. Computers will be used to assist with student learning and must be used responsibly. In addition, District CRTs address Arizona State Standards and will be included in student grades. ACT and AIMS tests assess Arizona State Standards and are equally important to student learning.

Grading System:

Your grade will be based on the following:

1. Class assignments (bellwork, classwork, and quizzes) 20%

2. College and Career Readiness (participation, homework, on task behaviors) 20%

3. Assessments (seminar, essays, presentations, major projects, tests) 60%

Grading A 90 - 100

Chart: B 80 - 89

C 70 - 79

D 60 - 69
