Mock Trial

Course Description:

In Mock Trial, students will model the roles of attorneys, plaintiffs and defendants. They will actively prepare and present their cases in a statewide competition sponsored by the Oklahoma Bar Assocation.

By interpreting, analyzing and portraying the major issues of a case, students obtain a unique insider's perspective of the American legal process. Participants develop self-esteem, poise and confidence through both individual and team efforts.

The programhelps students develop public speaking skills, encourages deductive and inductive reasoning, sharpens reading comprehension, stimulates interest in governmental studies and increases appreciation for our judicial system as a means of enforcing society's laws.

Expectations:

  1. Student participation is required on a daily basis. It is imperative that students are willing to participate in assignments that require speaking in front of the class.
  1. Students will be required to compete in the mock trial scrimmages and competitions. Maintaining a passing grade in all classes is imperative!!
  1. Students will be expected to arrive to class on time with materials ready for the day’s activity or lesson. Students will be required to bring a folder, paper and pencil EVERY day.

Grading Policy:

Students will be awarded points for daily assignments and projects, and competitions. In addition, students may obtain extra credit by participating in OSSAA speech contests.

Discipline:

  1. Students will be expected to exhibit appropriate behavior in the classroom. Common courtesy should be displayed when a teammate is presenting their case or project. Students should stay seated and refrain from talking.
  1. Students will be expected to be in their seat when the bell rings. Students that arrive late will be assigned tardy hall.
  1. NO EATING OR DRINKING during class! No gum during presentations.
  1. ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES! We don’t want to see any cell phones.
  1. Students must come to class with the required materials daily!

Required Materials:

  1. Students will be required to obtain a 1 ½” BLACK folder, 1 package pocket dividers with tabs, pen and pencil, and a zipper pouch (to be placed in folder). These supplies will be used daily.
  1. Students will be required to provide their own competition attire, which consists of the following:

Girls: Business suit, skirt and blouse, dress, or nice pant suit.

PROFESSIONAL DRESS IS REQUIRED!

Boys:Suit coat, slacks, shirt and tie, dress shoes
