PLANNING TO ATTEND MONDAY’S PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION? PREPARE FOR TRAFFIC

RICHMOND – As Washington, D.C., prepares for the 57th Presidential Inauguration to be held Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, the Virginia State Police are reminding Virginians to be prepared, as well. Though attendance is not expected to be as large as in 2009, Northern Virginia will still see a significant volume of additional traffic heading to the District for the various Inaugural activities.

Traffic

State police will have extra patrols and personnel assigned to Northern Virginia on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, so as to enhance traffic flow and emergency response. State police have coordinated with VDOT and local jurisdictions for the following road restrictions in Northern Virginia:

·  I-395 HOV northbound lanes will close at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21. HOV lanes on I-395 will re-open southbound upon conclusion of the Inaugural address.

·  I-395 main lanes and I-66 will be open to all traffic.

·  Memorial Bridge will be open to pedestrian traffic only, beginning at 5 a.m.

·  Key Bridge, Chain Bridge, Woodrow Wilson Bridge and American Legion Bridge will be open to all traffic

·  North Washington Street at Montgomery Street (City of Alexandria) to Reagan International Airport will be open to all traffic.

Those traveling through Virginia to Washington, D.C., should ask themselves:

°  With limited parking in the District, should I take a bus or other alternative means of mass transportation? For information on Metrorail access and other public transportation: http://inauguration.dc.gov/page/getting-there

°  If traveling by interstate, am I prepared for traffic delays and to wait an extended period of time? (Extra food, water, medications, etc.)

°  Is my vehicle prepared for traffic delays? (Vehicle is in good condition, adequate fuel, etc.)

°  If driving in inclement weather, do I have emergency items with me? (Extra blankets, flashlights, cell-phone charger, etc.)
