I am not a professional researcher; however, I have 20 years of experience working diligently with Colonial Pennsylvania records. My passion is piecing together early settlers, documenting their origin, settlement, and (if) subsequent migration. My primary area of focus is South Central Pennsylvania (viz., Franklin, Adams, York, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lancaster, and Berks counties).

I have not had opportunity to examine the original Lomersheimchurch books, which may identify other emigrants to the Middle Colonies. My work on the European side is rather primitive—relying primarily on abstracts available via familysearch.org. The actual church records should provide more information than abstracts placed online—including actual village of residence (some may have resided in satellite towns of Graben) and places of birth of the parents.

Using transcribed records available via familysearch.org databases as well as my own knowledge of Pennsylvania records, I have attempted to document below emigrants from Lomersheim on both sides of the Atlantic.

Lomersheim Emigrants to the Middle Colonies

The Adolph Gerber lists—published by Don Yoder in his compilationPennsylvania German Immigrants, 1709-1786: Lists Consolidated from Yearbooks of The Pennsylvania German Folklore Society—includes documentation for Lomersheim emigrants either from the Ludwigsburg Protocol (or those who applied for permission to emigrate) or through the Lomersheim pastor looking for evidence of migration in the local church books.

I found evidence of other emigrants via analysis of passenger lists, American church records, and the work of other genealogists. It is quite likely that there are other Eighteenth Century emigrants.

The Federhaff Family

The family of Nicholas Federhaff & his wife Maria Catharina Fegart departed in two waves for America. After Nicholas’s death in 1733, his widow married Johannes Vollmer. In 1750, Johannes Vollmer, his wife, and stepson BalthasarFederhaff arrived at Philadelphia on the Ship Nancy. Three years later, Nicholas and Maria Catharina’s other two childJohann Georg Federhaffarrived at Philadelphia aboard the Ship Patience.

Balthasar and George Federhaff resided briefly in the vicinity of the Borough of Lancaster in Lancaster County before removing to modern-day Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

Note: An Abraham Federhaff, son of Catharine Federhaff, died 30 Aug 1735, aged 4 years, and was buried the following day. Did the transcriber err in regards to either Anna Maria or Abraham? Should this be the same child?—I find no baptism for an Abraham Federhaff, and the pastor always named the father.

Engel Traber, 4 children, of whom 2 still live. This wife died 6 years ago. Since then he is a widower. Died of diarrhea.Aged 79 years, 8 months and 7 days.

Thedorus Friedrich Haux and his wife Anna Maria Federhaff

In the online church abstracts, Anna Maria’s father is identified as Jacob—however, more than a few descendants have placed her as the sister of Lomersheim emigrants Balthasar and Johann Georg Federhaff. The original church book should be consulted for verification.

The Haux family resided in Frederick County, Maryland. I have not pursued this family beyond a cursory search of online records.

The Johannes Vollmer Family

Johannes Vollmer was the stepfather of emigrants BalthasarFederhaff and Johann Georg Federhaff. They all resided briefly in the same vicinity in Lancaster County. Johannes died in 1759; however, I have not identified any estate records. Presumably his widow Catharina resided near her sons who lived in modern-day Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

I have not fully pursued Johannes Vollmer’s daughters.

Christian Pfeiffle from Dietersweyler in Württemberg married 16 Oct 1759 Dorothea Volmarin from Lomersheim. They had baptized:

Joseph Boger & his wife Susanna Jensel

Joseph Boger and Susanna Jensel married in 1747. Susanna’s father Friederichemigrated to the American Colonies in 1753. One year later Joseph & Susanna followed them. For a time, they all resided in the vicinity of Lancaster Borough in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Information posted by descendants online claim that Joseph migrated to Loudoun County, Virginia, where he died in 1783. However, this man is often identified as “Michael Joseph Boger.” I find no evidence of that name in German or Pennsylvania church records.

The Jensel Family

This surname evolved into Yensel, Jentzel, and other variants in Pennsylvania.

Four children of FriederichJensel and his wife Susanna Eglaussemigrated to America: Johann Friederich, Johann Michael, Susanna (wife of Joseph Boger), and Anna Maria (wife of Michael Rieder). The Jensel family is a classic example of how German church records can prove relationships impossible to discern in American records.
