Lincolnshire Police Alert Council Tax Scam
Fraudsters have been phoning victims telling them that they have been placed in the wrong Council Tax bracket for a number of years and are entitled to a rebate. They normally say that this rebate should be worth about £7,000. In order to receive the rebate the victims are told they will need to pay an administrative fee in advance which varies between £60 - £350. Once the victim makes the payment they are no longer able to make contact with the person they spoke to on the phone and when they contact the Council it will confirm that the Council knows nothing about it and it is a scam. The fraudsters have mainly been targeting victims in the Sussex area but it is possible that they may start to target victims in other areas. Protect yourself: Never respond to unsolicited phone calls Your local council will never phone out of the blue to discuss a council tax rebate. If you receive a call of this nature hang up straight away. No legitimate organisation will ask you to pay an advance fee in order to receive money so never give out your card details. If you believe you have been a victim of fraud, hang up and wait five minutes to clear the line as fraudsters sometimes keep the line open. Then call your bank or card issuer to report the fraud and where possible use a different phone line to make the call. You can report fraud online: or by telephone 0300 123 2040. At this time of yearresidents are politely requested to trim back trees and hedges that overhang the footpaths and highways so that they do not cause obstruction particularly on narrow lanes such as Wood Lane.
Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Installing a smoke alarm is easy to do and only takes a few minutes - just follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If it’s difficult for you to fit a smoke alarm yourself contact Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue by calling 01522 580397 or emailing . Looking after smoke alarms Once a week test each alarm by pressing the test button till the alarm sounds Once a year change the battery (unless it’s a ten-year alarm) Twice a year open the case and gently vacuum the inside using the soft-brush attachment to remove dust from the sensors. If it doesn’t open, vacuum through the holes After 10 years it’s best to get a whole new alarm
