ALGONKIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

STUDENT SERVICE CORPS

As a fifth grader at Algonkian Elementary in the school year 2015-2016, you have a very important job. You are a role model for students in kindergarten through fourth grade, as well as, for your own classmates.

Additionally, you have a number of opportunities to participate in services to your school community as a member of the Student Service Corps (SSC). This is an optional activity and is not required by you as a fifth grade student. The various SSC opportunities are as follows:

  • Algonkian Safety Patrols: Safety Patrols will serve as patrols on the bus and at various traffic/walking areas inside and outside of the school. In addition, they will be responsible for flags and certain office duties. This group will consist of approximately 30-35 patrols. A mandatory training session will be held, Friday, August 28, 2015from 8:30-10:00am, prior to Open House.
  • Technology Task Force (TTF): The TTF members will make sure that the lab and classroom computers, the printers, scanners, and audio/visual equipment are in working order, will work on special projects for their classrooms, will take pictures of school events with the digital cameras, and will work with the WALG morning TV show. This task force will consist of 12 members. A mandatory training session will be held, Friday, August 28, 2015 from 8:30-10:00am, prior to Open House.
  • Student Mentors: Student Mentors will work with students in specific grades to help promote good character, academic and social achievement, and citizenship. Mentors work in younger student classrooms, the library, and the art room as well as helping help new students adjust to life at Algonkian and as PBIS student helpers. (This group will consist of no more than 20-25 mentors and is based on school needs.). A mandatory training session will be held, Friday, August 28, 2015 from 8:30-10:00am, prior to Open House.
  • Green Team Student Representatives: This is an afterschool activity only, no school day time is required. Green team representatives will focus on promoting responsible citizenship of our earth. They will work on planning and participate in school green initiatives (such as recycling and school & garden upkeep). A mandatory training session will be held, Friday, August 28, 2015 from 8:30-10:00am, prior to Open House.

SSC REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS

In order to be a member of any part of the SSC, there are several requirements, which must be met:

  • You must maintain satisfactory grades of a “C or 3”s or better. If any grade falls below a “C or 3”s for a quarter, it will affect your status in the SSC. This may include temporary to permanent dismissal from duty. Reinstatement may be considered when your grades improve to a “C or 3”s or better.
  • You must maintain good behavior while on duty and in your classrooms (class, hallways, specials, recess, lunch, etc.). If at any time your behavior falls below acceptable standards for an Algonkian 5th grader, you may be placed on inactive status or dismissed from the SSC. Reinstatement to duty may be considered when the behavior has improved.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the SSC, please complete the attached application. You MUST indicate your first, second, and third choice as to which service team you wish to join. You will be notified before the end of the school year if you will be serving on the SSC. Please understand that a limited number of positions are offered in the SSC. Not everyone can be chosen and this should not stop you from enjoying the many other aspects of Algonkian life.

We are really excited about these opportunities available to you next year as we feel these will help you become productive citizens of Algonkian Elementary School and will help prepare you for middle school.

Remember, these are optional and the decision to join is up to you and your parents. We suggest you discuss this with your parents before making a decision. Your application must be returned to your classroom teacher by 2:30pm onWednesday, June 10, 2015.
