SECTION 264313 - SURGE PROTECTION FOR LOW-VOLTAGE

ELECTRICAL POWER CIRCUITS

Revise this Section by deleting and inserting text to meet Project-specific requirements.

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1SUMMARY

  1. Section includes field-mounted SPDs for low-voltage (120 to 600V) power distribution and control equipment.

1.2ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data:For each type of product.
  2. Include rated capacities, operating characteristics, electrical characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories.
  3. Copy of UL Category CodeVZCA certification, as a minimum, listing the tested values for VPRs, nominal ratings, MCOVs, type designations, OCPD requirements, model numbers, system voltages, and modes of protection.

1.3INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

  1. Field quality-control reports.
  2. Sample Warranty:For manufacturer's special warranty.

1.4CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

  1. Maintenance data.

1.5WARRANTY

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

  1. Manufacturer's Warranty:Manufacturer agrees to replace or replace SPDs that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

Most manufacturers offer five-year extended warranties on their equipment.Verify available warranties and warranty periods.

  1. Warranty Period:Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

See Editing Instruction No.1 in the Evaluations for cautions about named manufacturers and products.For an explanation of options and Contractor's product selection procedures, see SECTION 016000 "Product Requirements."

2.1GENERAL SPD REQUIREMENTS

  1. SPD with Accessories:Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.
  2. Comply with NFPA70.
  3. Comply with UL1449.
  4. MCOV of the SPD shall be the nominal system voltage.

2.2SERVICE ENTRANCE SUPPRESSOR

  1. SPDs:Comply with UL1449, Type1.
  2. SPDs with the following features and accessories:

Retain first subparagraph below when specifying Type1 SPD to be installed ahead of the service disconnect, when this disconnect is installed to facilitate maintenance.

  1. Integral disconnect switch.

Retain first subparagraph below to disconnect the SPD when low-current, high-impedance faults occur.

  1. Internal thermal protection that disconnects the SPD before damaging internal suppressor components.
  2. Indicator light display for protection status.

See Editing Instruction No.2 in the Evaluations for guidance before retaining option in "Peak Surge Current Rating" Paragraph below.Generally available surge current ratings are 300, 250, 200, 150, and 100 kA.

  1. Peak Surge Current Rating:The minimum single-pulse surge current withstand rating per phase shall not be less than 200 kA.The peak surge current rating shall be the arithmetic sum of the ratings of the individual MOVs in a given mode.

Retain one of first two paragraphs below.Verify compatibility of peak surge current rating and VPR.

  1. Protection modes and UL1449 VPR for grounded wye circuits with 480Y/277V or 208Y/120V, three-phase, four-wire circuits shall not exceed the following:
  2. Line to Neutral:1200V for 480Y/277V and 700V for 208Y/120V.
  3. Line to Ground:1200V for 480Y/277V and 700V for 208Y/120V.
  4. Line to Line:2000V for 480Y/277V and 1000V for 208Y/120V.
  5. Protection modes and UL1449 VPR for 240/120V, single-phase, three-wire circuits shall not exceed the following:
  6. Line to Neutral:700V.
  7. Line to Ground: 700V.
  8. Line to Line:1000V.

  1. SCCR:Equal or exceed 100 kA.

2.3PANEL SUPPRESSORS

Retain this article for SPDs other than those installed at the service entrance.SPD described in this article is required by NFPA70 to be installed with OCPD.The type and size of OCPD depends on the UL listing requirements.See "SPD Types" Article in the Evaluations.

  1. SPDs:Comply with UL1449, Type2.
  2. Include LED indicator lights for power and protection status.

Retain subparagraph below to disconnect the SPD when low-current, high-impedance faults occur.

  3. Line to Ground: 1200 V for 480Y/277 V and 200 V for 208Y/120 V.
  4. Line to Line: 2000 V for 480Y/277 V and 1000 V for 208Y/120 V.
  5. Protection modes and UL1449 VPR for 240/120-V, single-phase, three-wire circuits shall not exceed the following:
  6. Line to Neutral:700V.
  7. Line to Ground:700V.
  8. Neutral to Ground:700V.
  9. Line to Line:1200V.

2.4ENCLOSURES

  1. Indoor Enclosures:NEMA250, Type1.
  2. Outdoor Enclosures:NEMA250, Type4.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1INSTALLATION

  1. Comply with NECA1.
  2. Install an OCPD or disconnect as required to comply with the UL listing of the SPD.
  3. Install SPDs with conductors between suppressor and points of attachment as short and straight as possible, and adjust circuit-breaker positions to achieve shortest and straightest leads.Do not splice and extend SPD leads unless specifically permitted by manufacturer.Do not exceed manufacturer's recommended lead length.Do not bond neutral and ground.
  4. Use crimped connectors and splices only.Wire nuts are unacceptable.
  5. Complete startup checks according to manufacturer's written instructions.Energize SPDs after power system has been energized, stabilized, and tested.

3.2FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

Retain "Perform the following tests and inspections" Paragraph below to require Contractor to perform tests and inspections.

  1. Perform the following tests and inspections with the assistance of a factory-authorized service representative.
  2. Compare equipment nameplate data for compliance with Drawings and Specifications.
  3. Inspect anchorage, alignment, grounding, and clearances.
  4. Verify that electrical wiring installation complies with manufacturer's written installation requirements.

  1. An SPD will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections.
  2. Prepare test and inspection reports.

3.3DEMONSTRATION

  1. Train Owner's maintenance personnel to operate and maintain SPDs.
