Another Awards Ceremony for the Youngsters
KirklandBrown Wins the GrandSlam Grand Prize
The Wayne County 5GrandSlam Youth Challenge held its Annual Awards Ceremony at the Sodus Point Fire Hall, Saturday, August 23rdand over 70 people enjoyed the exciting event.The young anglers, who competed during the three month long contest, were rewarded for their fishing prowess; receiving plaques, gift certificates, prizes, and more importantly, applause from the adults and peers attending the ceremony.
Walt Crum was the main attraction for the youngsters when he displayed his “Balloon Art.” Crum has attended this event for the last four years and can twist and turn a balloon resembling any creature on earth.
After a lunch of hotdogs, Dan Gilmore from the Wayne County Federation of Sportsman’s Club, acknowledged the winning youngsters who fished the three month derby. Nancy Wilkes, from McDonald’s of Wayne County presented the trophies and plaques to young anglers.
Kirkland Brown took top honors in the 8-16 group by winning the GrandSlam Grand Prize. The fifteen year old youngster from Clyde caught all five species of trout and salmon. His total weight was 49.06 pounds. The youngster was presented a plaque and a $200 Visa gift certificate.The commemorative plaque was framed around a picture of Brown holding his king salmon.
Tanner Brown, Kirkland’s twelve year old brother, took second place in the GrandSlam with five fish totaling 48.05…a pound and an ounce shy of catching his brother.
There are two age groups; youth 4 -7 years of age and 8 -16 years of age. Within the two age groups there are three separate divisions in the fishing derby. The GrandSlam Division is the cold water fish contest. Catch all five species of trout and salmon in Lake Ontario (Coho, Chinook, brown and lake trout, and rainbow) and you qualify for the Grand Prize. Once you catch all five, you can add to your score with a heavier catch.
The Challenge Division has the same criteria, although the five fish to qualify are warm water species; pike, perch, walleye, small and largemouth bass.
Species is the third division. The largest fish in any division is a winner.
The highlight of this year’s GrandSlam Youth Derby was the drawing for a lifetime fishing license donated by The Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen’s Club. Selecting the lucky youngster was Dave Schueler representing the Federation. Every youngster who registered for the derby was eligible for the drawing and the lifetime license went to eight year-old Jonah Schichtel from Ontario.
During the 2014 event 75 young anglers fished the waters of Wayne County and 42 caught and entered fish during the three month event.
The Wayne County 5 GrandSlam Youth Challenge is sponsored by the Wayne County Federation of Sportsman’s Clubs and the Wayne County Derby Committee.
