Journal: What are the reason why Mawi's life in the refugee camp was so difficult?
Since 1980, many refugees have lived the hardship of war; that is why they had to leave their countries in order to find a safe place. Mawi was one of the Ethiopian
refugees who suffered a lot from the bitterness of the camp. Therefore, it was difficult for
him in his childhood. There are many reasons ahich point out the difficulties of the Sudanese camp.
The first reason why Mawi's life was so difficult was the violent environment.
In fact, the violence was the label of the camp life. In retrospect, his teacher was beating
him sensless without pity. Also his classmate was violent with him. That is why he and
his brother Tewolde were mastering Sudanese style fighting in order to guarantee their life. Actually, it was very difficult for him because he was resisting a lot of enemies. Instead of learning how to love life and the others, he and his brother were learning the survival fighting. Another significant cause of Mawi's suffering was the bad living conditions. For example, there wasn't enough food, water, and no guarantees for medicine. Moreover, the desert was very hot, so Mawi suffered a lot from the hot weather
and was physically malnourished. A thirdreason is that the refugee camp was unpleasant for Mawi because of his sickness. He needed to overcome serious disease
called kala-azar. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough medical care. The most important
reason was the famine. It was very hard to live in those circumstances whereas there
was a lot of refugees and less food. Consequently, the famine always was threatening him and his people. Finally, the psychological affect to him was the despair. Mawi had
a little hope for new life; he was surviving for nothing because the city, Awad, was
the home of the hopeless. Therefore, he was psychologically tormented. And also Mawi
suffered and got upset because of his dog's situation.
From Mawi's situation,I have learned that it was really such a bad experience for him. On the other hand, the sufferance of the camp taught him a lot of things. For
example patience, the optimistic vision of life, and strength. All that can help him to face
the upcoming difficulties in his new life.
