JOB TITLE:Substitute Teacher
REPORTS TO:Building Principal
POSITION:Various days throughout the Student Calendar Part-time (scheduled as needed)
PAY:$90.00 per Day (1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 or full day increments)
SUMMARY:
DEFINITION: The Substitute Teacher carries out the absent teacher’s prepared lesson plans or alternative plans directed by the building principal. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Substitute Teacher must work closely with other staff and the administration.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: During a prolonged absence as defined by board policy, the substitute is responsible for performing all essential functions identified in the absent teacher’s job description.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follows the teacher’s written lesson plansor alternative plans directed by the building principal.
- Teaches scheduled classes.
- Utilizes effective, positive classroom management strategies
- Prepares a written summary of work completed and special situations or problems encountered.
- Follows site management and discipline procedures.
- Develops and maintains a positive learning environment.
- Varies instructional techniques to address individual learning styles.
- Provides guidance, communicates high expectations, and shows an active interest in student progress.
- Consults with parents as needed (e.g., telephone calls, messages, meetings, etc.).
- Supervises non-classroom duties when assigned
- Consistently demonstrates effective problem solving skills
- Makes all job-related decisions based on the needs of the students and district based as identified in policy and by the supervisor
- Perform other duties as assigned

Applicant must be able to withstand a State of Nevada law enforcement background check and possess current Nevada State Substitute Teaching License.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

Knowledge of
- Educational theory and teaching practices;
- Principles and methods for curriculum and training design;
- Teaching and instruction principles for individuals and groups;

- Education code, board rules, district policies, and operating procedures.

- Provide instruction in a (elementary, middle school, high school) classroom.

- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies aligned with instructional objectives, in order to meet the needs of all students;
- Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff;
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy;
- Maintain and improve professional competence;
- Communicate effectively both written and orally;
- De-ecscalate problems and stressful sitautions;
- Think and act quickly and calmly in emergencies; and
- Prepare course materials, homework assignments, and handouts.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Required
Current Nevada State Substitute Teaching License.
Preferred
62 semester credits, with 6 semester credits in professional education, or a bachelor’s or higher degree earned through a regionally accredited college/university
Desired
Demonstrated willingness to assist students with their academic success

Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, and other materials. Some reaching for items above and below desk level. Some reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping to access files and records is necessary. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate a personal computer using word processing and databases. Involves hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Light lifting (up to 25 pounds) is occasionally required.

Exposure to climate controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. May involve exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud and occasional to frequent time periods. May involve work in crowded environments.
Hazards: Classroom furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
BloodBorne Pathogens: An encounter with blood or other bodily fluids may occur in this line of work, you will be expected to know and follow the safety steps in the safety training provided annually.
