Project Number: LIFE10 ENV/GR/594
Duration: 01/09/11–31/08/15
Project: Best practices for agricultural wastes (AW) treatment and reuse in the Mediterranean countries,
January30, 2015
Chania, Greece
Subject: “Activities carried out during January2015”
- In the line of Action 5, the effect of different fertilization treatments (organic, mineral fertilizer and their combination) as well as irrigation with wastewater (pig slurry liquid fraction) of tomato and lettuce in greenhouseisconsidered. The second cultivation of tomato irrigated with liquid pig slurry has been completed; tomato fruits, soil and leaf samples are analyzed. The effect of combined organic and inorganic fertilization on cereal growth (barley and wheat) in open field is also evaluated. The plots of the previous cereal cultivation were fertilized by the end of December 2014 and barley and wheat seeds were sown on January 9,2015.
In Action 6, cultivation of different vegetables and aromatic plants (lettuce, rocket, lamb’s lettuce, basil, rosemary and cabbage) is implemented in greenhouse and in open field. Data collected from cultivation tests are considered to define the effect of different factors (compost application rate, addition of zeolite or fertilizer) on biomass production of vegetables and aromatic plants.
Collection of experimental data from demonstration Actions 5 and 6 is in progress. These data are sent by Spanish and Italian partners to TUC and SIGNOSIS and areconsidered in the line of Actions 7 and 8.
- In the line of Action 7, data are continuously collected from Spanish and Italian partners regarding demonstration activities (Actions 5 and 6). LCA study and risk analysis are carried out by considering these updated results.
- In the line of Action 9, various dissemination activities are implemented:
-The project website the Facebook ( Project?fref=ts) and Twitter (@WasteReuse) fan pages are continuously updated.
-Visits of farmers and stakeholders at demonstration areas in Spain and Italy are in progress.
-Wastereuse partners will participate at the 3rdInternational Symposium on Organic Matter Management and Compost Use in Horticulture to be held in Murcia (Spain) on 20-24 April 2015. An abstract entitled “Effect of the addition of sawdust biochar and zeolite on the quality of compost produced from agricultural wastes” has been already submitted. The next project meeting may be held in Murcia, in the same period.
-Videos introducing Wastereuse by Prof K. Komnitsas (coordinator), Dr Ma Tereza Hernandez Fernandez (CEBAS-CSIS leader), Dr Federico Tinivella (CERSAA leader) have been uploaded on by SIGNOSIS. The videos can be viewed following the links: After translation and subtitling by SIGNOSIS, videos will be also uploaded on the project website.
