AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THOMAS S. SUMMERS, SHERIFF OF CALHOUN COUNTY, FOR TWENTYTHREE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF CALHOUN COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFF OF THE YEAR BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Sheriff Thomas S. Summers will be honored as South Carolina Sheriff of the Year by the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association at their awards banquet to be held on July 13, 2011; and
Whereas, fellow sheriffs nominate their peers and an independent panel then chooses the recipient of this coveted award for the sheriff who exemplifies excellence and leadership in law enforcement in South Carolina, qualities which aptly describe Sheriff Summers; and
Whereas, a veteran with twentythree years of lawenforcement experience, Sheriff Summersset a standard of excellence time and again as he rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of sergeant and lieutenant; and
Whereas, he began his lawenforcement career in 1987 as a deputy in the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, and one year later, he was named Deputy of the Year; and
Whereas, in 1994, he was named assistant chief of police for the Town of St. Matthews, and two years later was selected to fill the position of chief of police; and
Whereas, dedicated to bringing law breakers to justice and improving the quality of life for residents of Calhoun County, Thomas Summers has served as the Sheriff of Calhoun County since 2001; and
Whereas, a resident of Calhoun County for forty years and a faithful member of Cameron Baptist Church, Sheriff Summers is a graduate of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, and the FBI Command College; and
Whereas, sheriffs in South Carolina are elected officials who serve as the chief lawenforcement officers for a county and are active in all three branches of the criminaljustice system: law enforcement, the courts, and corrections; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the standard of excellence that Sheriff Thomas S. Summers brings to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and for the safety he offers to the citizens of our State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Thomas S. Summers, Sheriff of Calhoun County for twentythree years of service to the citizens of Calhoun County, and congratulate him for being named South Carolina Sheriff of the Year by the South Carolina Sheriffs’ Association.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented toThomas S. Summers.
